It seems certaiin that there is a fault in the harness , the connectors or the switches or fuse box. since the circuit activated when the wires were shaken then it is a case of open circuit. You will need to check the +12 AT THE MAIN FUSE - HEADLIGHT FUSE.If there is no voltage then the harness is open . If present the line goes to the cluster switch and the switching from the unit must be confirmed. This powers a relay which is in the engine room - relay box - and it is possible that the relay had failed if there is power form the cluster switch.
You will need to trace the path using a multmeter or 12 volt park lamp with one side grounded so as to find the missing link.

OBSERVE THE FUSE AFTER THE BATTERY AND AFTER THE IGNITION SWITCH, FOLLOW THE RED CABLE FROM BATTERY, AND YOU WILL SEE OR FUSE OR C.BREAKER AND RESET OR REPLACE, DISCONNECT THE + RED TERMINAL, AND TEST WITH VOM TESTER. SEE THE DIAGRAM
