Your catalytic converter is bad ! misfiring cylinders sends raw fuel down exhaust to catalytic converter were it burns an melts the insides causing it to plug . Suggest you take your vehicle to repair shop ! A new Catalytic converter can cost up to $700.00 or more . Some states , New York , California have to have Carb. certified cats .

Could the wrong engine computer, bad injectors or a bad catalytic converter cause my engine to misfire and the exhaust to turn red hot right behind the catalytic converter???

Red hot is the best clue. I suspect a bad converter. Try disconnecting the converter and run to test. Look inside the converter to see if it is clogged with melted stuff or carbon. Bad gas in tank? How could it possibly run well if this is true? Clean tank and use fresh fuel.

2001 Caravan has red hot catalytic converter and #4 misfire error code.

Engine is way too rich. You will burn that car up. Unburned fuel is getting into the CAT and igniting. Check the injectors.

What would cause the two exhaust manifold pipes on the passenger side to glow red hot the ones on the driver side does not get red hot 2000 Mitsubishi galant 2 4

Try checking for a restriction in the system. possibly the catalytic converter. are the pipes before the muffler? you can smack your catalytic converter with a dead blow hammer a few times before you start the engine. you will hear a sound similar to breaking glass from inside the converter it's carbon build up. Start the engine and rev it up a little. If it was constricted the carbon you broke loose will blow on out. If nothing is restricted in exhaust you may have a bad exhaust valve on that side.

Engine running rich

Sounds like a dead coil pack and needs replaced cause you're getting no fire to those plugs and causing a rough idle. Another thing is, that catalytic converter will only turn red because it's plugged up and needs replaced. Have that checked out friend.

Catalytic converter gets red hot

No flashing check engine light? I would say that unburnt fuel is being burnt inside the converter, melting its interior down.
The rough running could come from a misfire from one or more cylinders. The fuel which is not burnt in the engine, will burn off in the converter. Don t continue driving, it will ruin the converter.

The exhaust systems are of a two-piece construction for production and five-piece construction for service.
Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter fitted to the Focus range resembles a small muffler. Because of the high temperatures at which the catalytic converter operates, the vehicle body areas around the catalytic converter are protected by heat shields. The catalytic converter controls three emissions; Hydro carbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
Catalyst deactivation due to poisoning
Sulphur (S) in the fuel can cause deactivation of the catalyst.
Lead (Pb) in fuel can cause a severe deactivation at levels above 5 mg per liter of fuel. It is therefore essential that vehicles with catalytic converters always operate on unleaded fuel.
Zinc (Zn) and phosphorus (P) present in some oils, can cause deactivation if oil consumption is high.
The effect of sulphur is felt most if it is released from the catalytic converter as hydrogen sulphide (H2S). This has an unpleasant odor similar to rotten eggs. Changing the fuel manufacturer may help in reducing this phenomena.
To minimize H2S emissions, it is essential that the idle CO level is within specification and that the engine emission system is functioning correctly. For additional information, refer to Section 303-08A or Section 303-08B.
ani_caut.gif CAUTION: If temperatures exceeding 900°C are achieved the catalyst substrates will start to deteriorate. It is important that the cause is defined and rectified if subsequent melts are to be prevented.
Catalyst melts are normally accompanied by loss of power due to excessive back pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 303-07A or Section 303-07B.
High substrate temperatures are caused by the ignition or the fuel systems. For additional information, refer to Section 303-07A or Section 303-07B.
Misfires at high engine speed may result in an almost instantaneous melt.

Sudden major loss of power!!

if the smoke was white it means your engine is leaking antifreezeinto the cylinders and burning it in the combustion chamber. the engine block may be cracked because the block probably froze during the winter as far as the catalytic converter it is probably clogged because the antifreeze is coating the inside of the converter

My son has a 2002 GS, and from time to time the check engine light comes on and the last time they fixed one of the catalytic converter sensors and all was well. Tonight the engine starting bumping like...

Sounds like there might be something inside of your exhaust creating pressure making your pipes hot. You might need a new Catalytic Converter. Dont wait too long to check this out, because if you do need a new Catalytic converter, your exhaust Manifold MAY Melt to your Head because of the heat.
