The safest way to do is by holding the camshaft with a 24mm open wrench and a socket and ratchet on bolt side, this is accomplished by removing valve cover, same if a 4 or 6 cyl. Camshaft has a provision for the wrench, other way is by holding the gear with a chain wrench be careful not to broke or deform that gear.

SOURCE: replacement a camshaft 1993 toyota camry v6 how to

public libuary...Chilton or Haynes Manuel.  Coat the new camshaft with STP or grease when installing.  Are you doing both cams?  Usually they wear out from not enough oil reaching them.  You may consider replacing the lifters at the same time.

SOURCE: 1993 Toyota Camry V6 Timing Settings

Get a T belt from toyota. It has 3 white lines on it and and arrow mark. 2 lines are solid and one is broken. Put the arrow facing away from the engine. The cam gears have a dot punched into them near a certain tooth. This is where the solid white lines will line up with. The crank gear will have a dot also. It will line up at 90 degrees from the top, towards the front of the car. This is where the broken line will match up with. With the belt installed with all lines on their proper dots and arrow away from the engine, you valve timming is correct.
Of course you need to remove and compress the tensioner also. I assume you know this already since you didn't ask.

Need to swap engines in a 99 toyota solara 2.2 with auto. What is most efficient way to get engine out? Does it require trans removal? Do I go up or down with engine. Don't have manual but owned a shop for...

First drain all fluids, remove all wiring, hoses, tie rod ends, controll arms, shafts, i recommend removing the transmission but you dont have to it just makes things easier. after all electrical and hardware has been disconnected from the engine you can put your engine hoist under the motor snug and remove the motor mounts, pull the motor out and your done. good luck

1995 toyota camry leaking oil from behind the timing belt cover. Isn't this a major repair? Is the leak more than likely a camshaft seal?

If you haven't had the timing belt replace (60,000 miles is the suggested service intervale) this is an overlap of having the timing belt replaced.
If the timing belt is not due for replacement and its the cam shaft seal that is leaking. Its a pretty easy fix. Remove the top timing belt cover , and the crankshaft sensor wiring you may have to remove the front engine mount . Set #1 piston at TDC, Loosen tensioner w/ spring slip off belt. **Remove sprocket pull out old seal with a sharp pick. Greese and install new seal make sure its flush with its bore . Reistall sprocket. Slide belt over Cam sprocket tighten tensioner. Install cover and mount (if applicable) Check timing marks by turning crank two revolutions.
** If CamSprocket Bolt is difficult to remove then remove valve cover and use a 21mm wrench to hold the Camshaft while you crack off Cam Sprocket Bolt.
You will see the groves on the Camshaft where you can place a wrench to hold the shaft.
After you replaced the seal replace the valve cover gasket ONLY IF YOU HAD TO REMOVE THE COVER TO HOLD THE CAM WHILE REMOVING ITS BOLT.

This is about as major as it gets.

You have to remove the bottom back seet and take off the small side custions on the back part. When you take off the bottom seat it reveals a bolt that has to come off in order to remove the small side custion.Take the bolt out and lift the custion straight up and it will come off. The top of the strut is then exposed
