Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix

Check engine light keeps coming on

At first the check engine light seemed to come on right after i got gas so I didn't worry about it but it has continued to come on. My cousin has a reader (i believe it is the actron). When he attached it to my car it came back with "P0171 System Too Lean" and "P0507 Idle Control System RPM High". I dont really know anything about cars but I like to be prepared when I go to the mechanic so they dont try to get over on me. Can anyone give me information on what these codes mean and what is needed to get fixed...if its that simple. Appreciate any help you can be

One very likely possibility is a vacuum leak. This creates the lean fuel code. In response to lean fuel the pcm (computer) increases fuel delivery thus creating the high rpm code. First check engine over for vacuum leak especially rubber and hard plastic vacuum tubing that could have broken or developed a hole. High heat areas, such as on top of intake, are especially susceptible.

Engine light staying on

The engine light comes on from some kind of problem with the engine. It could be a sensor of any kind. The best thing to do is go to a place like AutoZone and have them scan it and find out what is going on. One thing you could check is the gas cap, if she put gas in it and didn't get the cap on tight it could set a code and turn on the light. If you get the cap on right the light should eventually go out. Please rate my answer so I get the points for answering your question.

ENVOY FUEL GUAGE PROBLEMS--- GAS GAUGE DOES NOT REGISTER ON FILL UP--- CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON WHEN YOU FILL UP -----THEN GOES OUT AFTER 1ST. 20 TO 40 MILES. BEN GOING ON FOR LONG TIME ONLY WORRY WHEN...

GMC sent me a letter saying that gas guage not working has been a problem and they will fix and pay half.
Also my mechanic says that it is common to get a check engine lite when you add gas to tank, especially when you fill it. Sometimes I will take off gas cap and let air out then replace cap and the check engine lite will go off. (usually). Nothing to worry about.

I accidently put premuim gas in ny 02Protege (only 1/2 tank) now my check engine light went on...should i be worried?? how do i know the problem is the gas i put in? car runs fine...

Good Morning

Dont worry.

The check engine light is telling you something, but not that you put the gas in the tank. Probably an emission system gone haywire for a bit.

Autozone will check the light for free when you get a chance. But it is NOT the gas, so dont worry about it ...

Have a great day

2001 Saab 9-3 Convertible Check Engine Light

I have been driving my SAAB 9-5 with an engine light on for 3 years. I consistently get 29mpg average so I don't worry about it. I just change the oil, check the fluid levels and keep going. It is probably an O2 sensor and until your gas mlg suffers, I wouldn't. The dealer will hit you with a $90 diagnostic fee no matter what.

If you think this helped you please leave me good feedback.

Engine check light

one problem might be the gas cap, sometimes if you don't get it on just right the check engine light will come on. I have had it happen a couple of times.
