Check your IAC motor (Idle Air Control) It could be sticking open.

How do I correct high idle problem

Year/make/model??? Applying vacuum to the EGR and making the valve open will not be the correction. Once opened, this valve allows unburned exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber resulting in a rich mixture. The computer sees this rich mixture and reduces the injector pulse allowing the idle to slightly lower. If the vehicle were at proper idle speed and this valve is opened, it would run rough snd possibly stall

Just put in brand new alternator 2 days ago. Now it wants to stall when slowing down and at intersections.

Have car scanned at autozone or similar. My guess is egr valve or IAC. Egr exhaust gas recirculating valve, IAC idle air ?ontrol valve.

Fixed egr vac sys on 98 hyundai sonata 3.0 v6 now engine runs rough

It sounds like a vacuum problem is keeping the EGR valve open causing the other sensors to read this and more fuel would be injected by the ECM. u may of gotten an egr code but the problem is not the valve itself.

Check your air filter,If that is clear check the voltage is should be at 2 volts above battery voltage so you will be looking at 13-14 volt at battery, to be in standing, I m trying to relate this as one symptom and pinpoint it. if its idle air control it will cause you to have a hard gear shift but will not cause you to bog down. you are a OBD 1 so dont relay on a engine code its voatile in memory(once key is turned off). Is your running temperature kinda high, this is a classic plugged exhaust, you may have one.

Check your Idle air control valve or EGR valve, unplug egr valve and if it idles down and smooths out then replace it, if nothing changes I would consider replacing the IAC.

It sounds like your EGR valve needs to be replaced. You can go to any auto parts store and get one. Try replacing spark plugs and plug wires also. If the timing was off it would pick up speed slowly and would vibrate really bad at idle. When you go to accelerate if it doesn't accelerate normally it may be the timing but i highly dought it. Try plugs and wires first. then the EGR valve.

Check for a stuck open EGR valve,it will have to be removed to be checked.Or you have a large vacuum leak, either one will increase idle and fuel causing hot cat and high idle.
