I have a 1947 Mercury with a 1951 engine, the clutch will not disengage.

probably will find that the throw out arm is not adjusted to bring the throw our bearing close to the pressure plate fingers ( assuming that every thing else is correct). The pivot ball for the arm is adjustable in the bell housing to take up so much slack. Other than that the clutch plate is not being released or the clutch plate is in back to front and the hub is hitting on the flywheel bolts.

while pulling release handle punch the hood near wiper side with bottom of your fist or have someone else do it if you can't reach it while pulling out handle,if you see front of hood lift in any way you should be able to open it then, but before closing it again you should spray the hood latch with a good amount of wd40,that usually get hood working normal again.

I can't open the hood on my 96 Mercury Grand Marquis. The pull handle works fine but moves so easily I suspect it is no longer connected to the latch.

Sounds like the cable is broken. Try having someone put pressure on the hood while you pull on the hood handle in your vehicle. If this doesn't work you'll have to have your helper bang on the hood while you pull the handle. It might also be a spring broken in the hood latch either first or secondary latch. The latch is usually bolted to the front of the radiator facing the grill. If you can get something in there to release the first latch you can move the hook with you fingers. Be careful prying it open. You don't want to dent the hood.

I am working on a 2000 Mercury Cougar and the hood latch won't release when the handle is pulled. I can hear something moving under the front of the hood when the lever is pulled but nothing happens. ...

yes you have to go into the chamber from underneath with a crow bar or similar tool to release the hood latch. once opened check the cable and the latch and with a little luck a few squirts of WD40 is all that will be needed.

How can I open the hood of my 1998 mercury sable. It has an electric release and has a dead battery, I see no manual release.

If you can access the cabin plug a lead into the cigerette lighter socket and apply 12v, this will back feed the system enough the open the hood. you may need ignition on to do this.
