The brake rlease switch for the gearshift might need adjusted-replaced or the shifter itself might need adjusted

sounds like you have a broken shifter cable.Go under the rig and shift the transmision manually.Put on the parking brake and on the drivers side of the trany should be the lever to move.Look for the broken part while you are there it will also help to locate the shift lever on the trany.

SOURCE: 04 gmc envoy ,can't move
ingition switch has a sending unit to release shift...may be bad replace ignition modual or check for loose connection...theres also a lockout on transmission..if theres a problem there..like a bad shaft pulling out of the trany housing..the shafts have c clips on the ends that hole the shaft in ,,if they fail it locks you out so you cannot drive the car..first run scan to code it

The shift cable probably has broken, usually the ring at the end breaks. Below is a diagram that shows the cable (it is item #7)
