It sounds like choke heater is not working, if electric test for power if heated by exhaust make sure tubes are clear and hot air is flowing in choke housing. Is the choke butterfly too tight?. May need to adjust tension

How can I get my choke to open


The tube you're looking at is called a "heat riser". Warm air from off the exhaust manifold will rise in the tube, and warm the carb. If your choke doesn't gradually open with that, then most likely, it's stuck or the temperature coil is broken. Check that the choke can be easily moved with your fingers. .. Lubricate as needed.

Sparking in power box when we use the generator and trips the braker


When you say "power box" do you mean the main breaker box in your house? Is the generator hooked up to the breaker that you say trips when the generator is on? There is a short somewhere. First check the generator. Is it running OK. In other words if you plug something into the generator receptacle directly, does it work? If the generator itself works properly, then check the wiring from the generator to the circuit breaker. DO NOT use the generator until the problem solved = safety first.

Adjusting the choke


nice engine get rid of the choke all together you dont need it its just to choke the engine for cold starting i would get a 725 cfm without choke for it or turn it over to injection tbi or port. do you have an electric fuel pump you will want one when doing without the choke

How do you check an automatic choke


It depends on the vehicle. Some or all manufacturers have a specific procedure for testing the choke and all its linkages and controls. But just observing your choke in operation from a cold engine (choke butterfly valve barely open) to a warm engine (choke valve fully open) should give you a good idea of how well it works. The electric assist on chokes is mainly for opening the choke a biy sooner than the mechanical operation of heating the spring inside the black choke housing, causing it to expand and open the choke valve.

I have 305 4 barrel in my 86 oldsmobile cutlass supreme, Im thinking there is something wrong with my choke. Sometimes it idles great when it runs for a while but when I took it for a drive up the road...


First inspect choke linkage to see if it is binding or sticking closed when engine is warm. You can spray with WD-40 to help it work more freely. If the carb has a round plastic housing over the choke spring check to see if it has three rivets holding it in place. If it has screws you can loosen the screws and turn the housing slightly to put less tension on the choke butterfly. If it has rivets, drill them out and replace with screws that fit the holes. In the summertime you can probably set a Q-jet carb all the way lean and still have enough fuel to start cold with a couple pumps on the throttle.

84 ford f150 carburetor was rebuilt runs great when cold kicks and bucks when warm have to stomp on throttle to get to go


Sounds as if your choke is hanging up, or not opening at all. With the engine warm remove the air cleaner, there is a butterfly valve right inside the top of the carburetor If this is closed or mostly closed your choke needs to be adjusted. There are manual and electric chokes, yours should be an electric choke. First with engine cold and the key turned to on check for voltage at the choke wires. If you have voltage, then you might just need to adjust your choke. Electric chokes heat up an element inside the choke to tighten a spring and open the choke butterfly valve at the top of the carburetor. There should be between 4 and 5 screws that hold a ring around the choke housing on the side of the carburetor with the wires going to it. While holding the round choke housing in place loosen all of the screws on the retaining ring. If you can feel the choke housing wanting to spin turn it the opposite way that it wants to turn. Do this in stages until your choke butterfly valve is open with the key turned on, or the engine warm. Hope this helps if you have more questions just ask.

How to I change the thermastat


The manual says it is on the lower left side of the engine near the front, at the inlet to the waterpump. It is in a housing that brings the lower radiator hose and heater return hose. The removal procedure is:
remove negative side of remote jumper terminal (disconnects battery)
  • drain cooling system
  • remove accessory drive belt in prep to remove generator
  • raise vehicle
  • remove generator attachment bolts and set generator aside
  • remove hoses from housing
  • remove housing bolts
  • remove thermostat and housing

Install is the reverse. Tighten housing bolts to 105 inch-pounds.
I haven't worked on this engine, just passing along what the manual describes.

1984 passat cl. the automatic choke runs too fast


the choke has 3 screws to adjust the unit,the choke itself will normaly be siezed inside at the age.With a warm engine, loosen the 3 screws and turn the choke untill the idle drops.

or as i did it-with a cold engine, remove the airffilter and with the 3 screws loose on the choke press the accelerator pedal just over half so the choke is engaged and the looking inside the filter housing adjust the choke flap by turning the choke housing until the flap is 3/4 closed and tighten slightly and start the car.Do remember to check your distributor timing whith a warm engine and make sure the sparkplugs and airfilter are okay as each upsets the other.
