Question about 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee V-8. Runs great normally. Problem: it has failed three times of engine shut down as running out of fuel. When I try to crank it you must hold it the floor and it cranks but you have to keep it there for awhile and slowly go back to idle,it appears to be flooding, sometimes it will idle others it dies again. It has no fault codes set. I cleaned the Idle air valve with no help. Sometimes it sits and starts right up.

The 1997 fuel filter is attached to the fuel pump inside the tank and not on the frame rail
    as is later models.

Hi
If you can gear the fuel pump running It may be OK but if you spray carb cleaner into the throttle body and it briefly starts, change the fuel filter (on frame rail on left side near the tank). If it does not start with spray, check for spark. Most common problem is crank position sensor, but, do not change it without testing first. (fairly expensive and difficult to change). There are numerous other tests you can do listed in inexpensive manuals such as haynes. (if replacing filter gets it running do a fuel pressure test to make sure pump is still OK)

hope u wil b helpfull
regards

Why does my 1997 grand Cherokee 318 have extreme extended crank after hot shut down, why does it always start great cold.

TRY THIS:
When starting the engine HOT, instead of moving the key directly to START, pause for the COUNT OF TEN at "ON," then (after the count of ten), engage the starter.
If the car starts more quickly when you do that, there are a couple of possibilities:
  1. Idle bypass valve is becoming sluggish, and/or your oxygen sensors need a moment to react (aging vehicle)
  2. Your fuel pressure regulator is not operating properly, bleeding pressure when the fuel pump is not running;
  3. One of your fuel injectors is not closing entirely, slowly leaking fuel into one of the cylinders and bleeding pressure from the fuel rail.
Most likely, 1 or 2, possibly 3 or a combination of the above.

If waiting for a count of ten does not help, it is possible that your engine temperature sensor has failed, and is engaging the cold start circuit, causing the mixture to be too rich when starting the engine hot.

My jeep grand cherokee lardo 1997 runs great than just die and hard to start and when it does it runs find ?

ever do a tune up? sparks, filters, every 60K?
hard starts , in the macro.
1: in bad need of a tune up. RTM read the opr guide, on service points.
2: weak compression. (engine basics)
3: weak spark. (see tune up)
4: bad fueling, too rich, too lean (tests) (lean ? for got the fuel filter?)
5: EGR valve sticking open.

is this the 4.0L engine? the true causes very by which it is.

Rough running engine. will not start after engine is warm, but starts after engine cools down.

try changing fuel filter as it may be clogged. the time you are waiting may allow deposits to settle back in line.

97 grand am: engine shuts off like u turned off the key. but restarts. runs great otherwise. only code is a vaccum leak in the fuel system that i havnt found yet. their is a relay around the glove box area...

Do you see a light in they dash that days "security" when this happens? It might be your anti theft system killing your fuel to injectors. The click in the glove box might be the they deterrent module failing. Had thee same sound in my Regal when the security failed. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

I have a1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee LMT v-8 4x4. The code reader said that it is the camshaft sensor bad, but i am then told that the vehicle doesnt have one. the vehicle runs great untill you turn it off. ...

This is common when using a aftermarket scanner to read codes. the problem you are having is a common one. replace the crankshaft sensor, its located at rear of the engine, its hard to see but its there. look at where the engine and tranny meet, i think is on the top near the driverside but if not there then look at pass/side but its near the top of the tranny housing. its common for this, crank sensor problem, good day.

Have to crank over for a long time to start, but when running it runs great

Check your fuel pressure regulator, sits on the fuel rail, could be leaking and so it takes time to built fuel pressure for it to start.

Engine runs fine, no problem want's tempature is

I had a similar problem with a Ford Excursion, it turned out to be intake manifold gaskets. It would stall then start right up again, it ran fine during warm up. But, once fully warmed up it would stall at stop lights and stuff like that. I did get a check engine light, the code was lean condition. I don't know on a Jeep, sorry I can't be of more help.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee cranks but won't start

Same thing happened to me at about 140k. It was the fuel pump. Best way to test if your pump is failing and loosing pressure is to see if the car will start immediately after it has been running, or turn the key to the alt position for a few minutes before starting. If your engine fires faster after it has been running or the key has been in the alt position you will probably need a new fuel pump. Great news is with a very deep socket to get the tank straps off its a 30 minute job to replace the pump/filter assembly.
