It can mean many things, one the compressor is not getting any power, second the clutch assembly is failing. The AC relay or fuse is blown.

On a 1998 chevy z71 with a 5.7 vortec. I believe im having compressor issues. Will it tear anything up if it is driven while the compressor is unplugged? And how can I tell if the compressor is bad?

IF THE COMPRESSOR DRIVE BELT TURNS WITH IT UPLUGGED YOU WILL NOT DO ANY DAMAGE. IT SIMPLY WILL WORK AS IF THE A/C IS NOT TURNED ON. IF BY UNPLUGGED YOU MEAN THE LINES ARE OFF THEN MOISTURE AND DIRT WILL ENTER THE SYSTEM

My AC is blowing hot and it has Freon. What most likely to be the problem?

Your compressor is not coming on. Test this by turning the car on and setting the AC to mac cold and out the top vents only. After 5 to ten minutes feel the low pressure AC line. Its normally the one witg the blue cap and has condensation on it. If it doesnt have condensation or doesnt feel cold, then the compressor may not be coming on. Also when there is an AC switch that axtivates the compressor when you turn the air on, this could be whats bad. If you know that the compressor is not comming on at this point, check your fuses for the compressor. Of you cant determine the problem at this point you may have to have it services.

AC Clutch noise and vibration

An A/C clutch will not make this concern happen, more likely the A/C compressor is begining to go out. The belt on the A/C clutch Assy. free wheels (spins feree on the pulley) when clutch is not engaged. If concern is not present with A/C off this means the bearings in the puley assy. ok. Once the A/C clutch is engaged it locks the compressor against the spinning pulley and turn the compressor chaft and spins the A/C compressor internal shaft. If you hear a loud "screach" when you turn on the A/C it means the belt slipped for a second, if it continiues to screach it means either the belt is loose or that the compressor is internaly locking up. I wouild start by checking the belt tension (if not equipted with and auto tensioner). You can also remove the belt and turn on the A/C and attempt to turn the clutch/pulley by hand, it should turn with a little effect but should not bind or lock at times if that happens compressor is bad.

Engine dies as soon as I turn on the air or heat.

If by heat you mean defrost, it could be a seized AC compressor or compressor clutch, since the AC compressor is also engaged when in defrost mode to remove moisture from the air.

Try turning the flat, round plate on the front of the AC compressor by hand (WITH THE ENGINE OFF!!) If turns with only a little resistance, the compressor is most likely NOT your problem. If it not turnable by hand, then your compressor is seized up will most likely need replaced.

Compressor make noise and air is not cold

HI,
If compressor make noise that means it's working, so low noise on compressor it is normal,
but just check when you turn a/c on, the hub...(kind of plate covers the compressor pulley)... starts runing, you might need refill freon but if compressor hub it is not woring, begin to check for electronic things such as fuses related with a/c

Whats needed to replace ac compressor on 2004 chevy silveraldohd 4x4 6.0

Make sure first tha it is the compressor. With the engine off turn the compressor clutch by hand. If you can turn it by hand it means it usually mean it is ok.

A/C is Not blowing cold air

Even though the Compressor is engaging it doesn't mean the Compressor is working internally. I would have the Compressor tested to determine if it is working properly.

How do you turn off the compressor for maxima 2000?

Do you mean the A/C compressor?
The a/c switch is in the dashboard.
If it is defective or the compressor just
kept running, simply trace the compressor wires
to their plug, and disconnect the wires/plug.
