Question about 2001 Mazda Protege
Sounds like a misfire. first check it intake hose from the air filter box to the throttle body. check it for cracks. remove it if you have to. air entering the intake behind the MAF sensor causes improper air/fuel mixture which could cause your misfire.
if all is well it could be in need of a tune up plugs/wires (don't use aftermarket wires get mazda ones) coils could also be weak.
start from plugs to wires to coils, after checking the intake hose.
