Question about Cars & Trucks

2000 Saturn sl1 turns off everytime I come to a stop sign or red light. In order for vehicle to stay on I have to keep foot on break while pumping the gas pedal. Mechanic said its the mass air sensor. Called a couple of auto parts stores. Everyone keeps saying this car does not have that part in it. I need help locating the mass air sensor if one exists in this vehicle. If that's not it what else could be the problem?

Saturn S-Series do not have a MAF. They have a Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor on/near the intake manifold. look near the air filter

If the diagnostic code reader says the fault is from the Oxygen Sensor fault then that is usually the cause, but I have also found that the Coil Packs go bad and cause the same problem you are experiencing. Remember the Coil Pack (ignition coil/spark coil) is an induction coil in the car's ignition system which transforms the battery's low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel. There is a mechanic's cheater to fixing it by loosen nut behind fuel jets and adjust with screwdriver a quarter turn at a time which will increase or decrease the MPH the car goes at idle. If increase idle from 5MPH to 8MPH then it will not shut off at stop light.

Have the "mechanic" show you the MAF system. Bet he can't.

If it has a mass air flow it should be near the airfilter assembly or on the hose going or coming out of it but for now forget that if there is no check engine light on take the air induction hose off of the intake ( carbureter if prefered ) inside where the gas pallet is take a clean rag and clean off all the build up of carbon on the pallet you can push it open with your finger and hold it open to clean all around inside i use brake cleaner or varsol on a rag also check your air filter if its not plugged up with dirt at the same time and are your plugs in good shape as well good luck

SOURCE: Changed Mass Air Flow sensor, CEL still displays problem

it almost sounds like a fouled fuel injector. this is a tricky problem because it involve so many different operations. the maf is used to deliver fuel and the o2 sensor tells how much. there are 2 o2 sensors one before cat 1 after. mabey check these out visually. the computer should pick these sensors up if there bad. is this a supercharged engine? ill try to come up with some other ideas for you soon.

SOURCE: 2000 chevy s10 runs for a few minutes then dies.

I doubt very much this is electrical. Rather do a visual inspection for vacuum pipes that are leaking or have become dislodged especially around the throttle body(Where the throttle cable is connected to) and plenumb chamber. If you find a place that looks like a pipe needs to be connected there, hold it closed with your finger and see if the revs pick up slightly. If it does then look for the pipe that needs to go there. You shouldnt have any pipes hanging loose around the engine bay. If you dont find anything on the engine itself follow every little pipe to where it goes/connects to and do the same. This costs nothing and a mechanic will charge you an hours' worth of labour for doing the same. The engine's fuel/air mixture is being leaned out somewhere. You can perhaps have the CO content tested to confirm, as this is relatively inexpensive.

SOURCE: engine runs rough and will quit running at stop

your idle air control valve may be the problem. This device controls the idle speed. It may be gummed up with deposits. this is what it the part looks like; http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=382734

you can remove it and spray it with carb cleaner to loosen up the valve or replace the assembly.
A faulty EGR valve and/or PVC valve will cause similar symptoms.

SOURCE: 1993 grand prix dying

your engine needs to re-learn its idle parameters. disconnect your battery for a minute or two, then reconnect and start vehicle and apply park brake and put it in drive. let it run for 10mins then shut it down and wait another minute and start it again and let run 5 mins. that should do it.

Hello. The GMC Sierra has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before checking it. You may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it if your gas tank is not empty, but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel. The GMC Sierra comes in a variety of styles and trim levels that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, or won't start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too
