Question about 1994 GMC Suburban

2 Answers

Engine dies intermittedly. Check engine light does not come on.

If I repeatedly pump the gas pedal the engine will turn over but dies. Try again and it eventually catches and keeps running without any noticeable problem and may run fine for several 100 miles or so. Then the problem appears again. Is this a sympton of a bad ECM?

Check the distributor module (ICM), it may have gone bad and needs to be replaced. It's around $40.00 and it's under the rotor in the distributor assembly. Check the red lead wire to the HEI for voltage, there should be 12 volts. It common for the ICM to fail on the HEI system when they heat up and if you go to Auto Zone, they can give you the step by step instructions to replace the ICM. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help. The other thing to is check the fuel pressure, it should have 13PSI  to 15PSI. Anything different, your going to have starting problems, If you don't have a fuel pressure gauge, you can lone one from Auto Zone and they can give you the step by step instructions to checking it and takes about 5 min to do it.

Try mass air flow sensor, or idle control system/ sensor. Could also be faulty coils or loose or damaged wires in the ignition circuit. Cheapest way to find out is an auto wrecker. You can probably get all those and more for a hundred bucks. Don't be afraid of used parts. You drive on them every day.

Mass air flow is in the big breather tube (rubber) that runs from your air breather to the engine. Idle contol is the closer parts to the throttle body. An auto parts store could maybe print a picture for you, or at least point them out if you can't find a picture on-line.

Starts and runs good then suddenly ck eng lite come on and it dies. Will start back up with holding gas pedal on floor and die again soon...repeat...

Your vehicle is equipped wit the OBD!1 (on board diagnostic system ) when your check engine light turns on it is setting a code. You need to have it scanned to get this code. This will point you in a direction to your problem. When you place the accelerator to the floor you put the system in the clear flood mode which is allowing you to start but then the problem takes over and kills the engine.

Check Engine light is on. Find out what DTC (diagnostic trouble code) is set and I can help you more. You can get a code puller from your local parts store.

Check Engine Light 1996 Nissan Maxima

The best way is to use a scan tool to clear the codes, that will turn off the light, also disconnecting the battery over night may work, but no completely sure about that, it varies from year to year.
