The rear end will be to hot to touch after driving but if it is really hot (like cannot get the finger anywhere near it )then the problem will be in the diff . Possible pin ion bearings are under excessive preload by nut using a new spacer under the pinion flange or attempting to remove back lash at the pinion flange by tightening up the pinion nut. Excessive oil and the wrong grade of oil ( ordinary diff oil in a LSD diff) or running one side tyre at a different profile height to the other. The popping noise may be oil burning off ( like fat in an overheated fry pan)

What kind of oil is needed in the rearend

If it did not have oil it would make the noise going straight. Check your brakes and the wheel bearings for play. Oil should be a GL5 70-90 wt gear oil.

Best way to fix front rearend gears are striped

the ONLY way is to replace the carrier (gears) Are you sure it's gears and not the axle shafts? Gears are pretty "bullet proof" and usually the only way to harm them is to run low or out of gear lube.

Replaced rear axle on a gmc 1500 4by4 with a 3.42 gear ratio as the original .but I noticed that I have to accelarate more just to keep up with trafic, do I have to reprogram the on board computer?

As long as it's the same ratio, it shouldn't effect the computer. I would check the numbers on the rearend to make sure it is the same gear ratio. Or there maybe a problem with the replacement rear end. Is it a locking differential rearend?

What type of lubricant is required for the limited slip rearend and does it also require an additive?

A good gear lube, like an 80-90 weight gear oil, and yes, a limited slip also needs a limited slip additive. This comes in a little bottle, add it first, then the other gear oil.

When i take off from a stop my rear end clicks then feels like a foward jerking, 2004 GMC safari cargo van.

DISCONNECT YOUR DRIVE SHAFT FROM THE REAREND THEN TURN YOUR REAR BY HAND AND IF YOU STILL HEAR CLICKING OR GRINDING
DETERMINE FROM SIDE OR MIDDLE. IF NOT BRAKES THEN REAREND BEARINGS. THESE REARS WERE FAMOUS FOR REAR BEARINGS.
AFTER REPAIR INSTALL SYNTHETIC FLUIDS.

How do i check fluid in in rearend on a 1998 GMC jimmy

On most differentials, there is a plug. It will have a square recess in the plug. Using a 3/8" ratchet and extension, place the extension in the plug and turn counter-clockwise to remove. (No socket required, just the extension.)

On most vehicles, the oil should be just below the level of the hole. I have relatively small hands, I just use my little finger to check the level of oil.

In past, I always used 90 weight gear oil to bring level of, but depending on your differential, you may need a special oil. (My 2001 Tahoe with locking differential used a synthetic oil. The dimwits at the oil change place added regular 90 weight oil, even after I told them not to, had to have dealer drain, and replace.)
