The crankshaft position sensor is a two pin sensor made up of plastic like material. It is located on the back side of the engine block about half way between the oil pan and the top of the block. It can only be accessed by crawling under the car. we have a 1996 3.1 monte carlo ls we need to repl - 33899bbd-15f1-451a-9a7a-a94f8be62e27.png

You only asked about the location of the Crankshaft Position sensor, and your good self did not mention the problem. Any how, following are the reasons due to with the engine could misfire:

    - The spark plug gaps are wide open.

    - Faulty, cracked or oil fouled spark plugs.

    - Camshaft Position Sensor faulty.

    - Crankshaft Position Sensor faulty.

    - Wiring.

    - High tension cords or igniters faulty.

    - Improper valve clearance.

    - Worn out throttle plate.

    - Air / fuel mixture too lean.

    - Fuel pressure too high.

    - Vacuum leaks in the intake manifold.

    - PCV valve stuck open.

    - Valve and/or ignition timing too late.

    - Burnt or ruptured engine valves.

    - Worn out valve guides.

    Hope that works. Thanks.

We have a 1996 3.1 we replaced the crackshaft sensor on it but it still cracks and backsfire when tring to start what else could we do

It is not the sensor: The problem is in the fuel adjustment, timing, and/or gas line filter, etc. Too many reasons and needs a total checkup.

Can't find the fuse box for a 96 Monte Carlo

The fuse box is located on the passenger side panel of the dash . you have to open the passanger door to get at it.

The other fuse boxes are under the hood, on each side under a diagonal support arm that has to be removed to get at the fuses & relays
