Question about Cars & Trucks

P0742 2001 Buick Regal. Constantly seem to be fixing something on this car, prob because it has over 200k miles! Lol. Right now it does not drive/shift right. If you are gentle with the throttle it's driveable to a point, but if you give it full throttle the engine revs up some like it should, but it acts like it's not going into gear. If you are being nice to it you have to let up off the gas a little to get it to move thru the gears while accelerating. Couldn't get it to give me a code, no warning lights on until I hooked up the scanner and went for a drive. When trying to accelerate and it does it's thing, the CEL will flash and it gives the code p0742 - Torque Converter stuck on. It does not die when stopping like I would expect, but the fuel mileage is horrible, most likely measured in gallons per mile lol

check to see if you have a transmission leak as well and if you do fix it

Transmission is getting serviced tomorrow, seems like no one services one until there is a problem, normally too late by then. Fluid seems pretty burnt up, but the car also suffers from old person syndrome, if it sees a speed above 30 mph it's rare. I know it's a torque convertor issue, hopefully service will help. A selanoid is generally beyond my level of dedication to do it my self. And then there is the fact that at 200k miles it's already double the average GM transmission life

UPDATE: Thanks for all the help, seems everyone was thinking along the same lines as me. Took it to the dealership and had them service the transmission, no one else would touch it considering the miles and questionable service history. While there they gave me a free check up and told me the catalytic converter was toast. Got that replaced at a little shop close to home in about 45 mins and it runs like new! Transmission service didn't give any improvement, but it definately needed to be done anyways!

Sounds like the torque converter is slipping. Have you check the oil level in the transmission? Also burnt oil can sometimes cause this problem.

SOURCE: I am getting horrible gas mileage... engine dieing

Look for a hole or leak in your air intake tube first, then do a basic tune up...plugs/rotor/air filter/dizzy cap (if needed) and inspect vacuum lines for cracks......these would be the most common causes of your problem

Look under the dash by the parking brake and try to see if any wires are being moved or chafed by the parking brake linkages. That is what I have found in the past.

Low coolant light keeps coming on and its not keeping anti freeze

this is a common complaint, GM/Buick recommends you remove the sensor from the radiator side tank and replace it.

1996 Buick Regal, 96k miles - Recent purchase - doesn't seem right.

Will your 'friend' take it back? 1 prob, likely a vaccum leak at the intake. 2 prob, at 'stopping'?? Brake pads. Stopped, good question. 3 prob, either the plastic cover or the horn pin under the steering wheel. 4 prob, This sounds like the exhaust 02 sensor is acting up. 5 prob, shock bushings or rubbers mounts on sway bar. Or the top bearing on a strut. 6 prob, Fixing the past probs 'may' solve this? 7 prob, Just live with this! You have enough on you plate already! Frankster016

96 regal 3.1 liter

This car must have many miles on it?? And not cared for! Never mind Check for vaccum leaks first. Then , at night, fire it up and look for sparks. No sparks, with a spray bottle dampen the ignition, this should lead you to the prob. Frankster016

A 1998 Buick Regal GS. 83,000 miles. For the last 30,000 miles, off and on, the engine shuts off when the turn signal is in use. I went to complain on the NHTSA site. Eight other Regal owners...

Maybe a solution.  Are you sure that its because your using your turn signal?  Does this occur while moving or while sitting idle?

My car engine would turn off while sitting idle at a traffic light.  Many people turn their signals on while idle instead of before they get to the light or stop sign.  There is a problem with the engine getting too hot while stopped and then turning off.  Make sure you're put your signal on before stopping and see if that makes a difference.  If it keeps turning off while just sitting it may be the engine.

However this might be something different and if so that very weird.
