Timing for a 1991 volvo 740

Hi, this is how to align timing on a 1991 Volvo 740.
There are marks for all three. Cam and Aux shafts have dots on face of outer gear. Cam lines up with mark on rear timing cover(about 1 o'clock). Aux lines up with mark on seal housing (about 3 o'clock) and crank lines up with mark on seal housing (about 12 o'clock).

Take care

My 1990 volvo 740 will crank the first time but after 15 minutes, if I cut it off it will not restart

Probably the starter or solenoid reacting to heat. After warm up, try shortcircuting the starter connectors with a tool or jumper leads (dont burn or shock yourself) or tapping the starter lightly with a hammer.
If this works change the starter.

1991 740 Wagon electrical problems

Was the car primarily in a Southern state--no winters? If yes, it could be the wiring harness that leads to the rear wiper/stop light inside the rear tail gate. They usually break at the flex point, and short to the frame.

it may vary by model year, but my 740 has access to the trunk compartment by pulling down the rear seat arm rest and simply reaching through the flexible blind.

No spark

On some of these the black relay on the shock tower supplies power to the coil, and the relay can fail. Swap it with the black coil on the other shock tower, they are the same.

The ignition power stage fails, and especially the rpm sensor. Have you checked the trouble codes?
