Question about 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Open Question

Why is my 1999 Toyota 4runner slow to take off in drive, takes off fine in low with manual shifting up to drive, what is problem?

Could it be the solenoid? Is it necessary to pull tranny to fix, costs associated for the do-it yourselfer type of person. I don't have the money to take it to tranny shop but could probably do it myself with proper guidance, first being diagnosis

SOURCE: 86 toyota 4runner idles low and has half the power

Ok, there are four problem spots that i recommend inspecting the first would be the air filter.

The air filter may be clogged or dirty. this can decrease the power out put and it can also affect the idle as well. the next check point would be inspecting the spark plugs. make sue the plugs are correctly gapped and are not fouled in anyway. if they are fouled or incorrectly gapped, this will cause the symptoms you are experiencing at this time. Another check point will be the wire set(spark plug wires). make sure the wires are in good condition. remove all wires from the plugs and look inside the wire head t inspect the contacts. they should be nice and clean.if the wires are worn, replace them accordingly. the final check point will be checking the PCV valve. this valve is located Under hood, center, upper engine area, top of engine, mounted in valve cover. the testing procedure to be preformed on this specific device is stated below.

# Check the ventilation hoses and lines for leaks or clogging. Clean or replace as necessary.

# Locate the PCV valve in the cylinder head cover and remove it by pulling it upward.

# Blow into the crankcase end of the valve. There should be free passage of air through the valve.

# Blow into the intake manifold end of the valve. There should be little or no passage of air through the valve.

# If the PCV valve failed either of the preceding two checks, it will require replacement.

You will find the problem for you erratic or low idle in the areas above.

Please rate and god bless:)

There is a technical service bulletin to correct this condition. Replacement of the car's Electronic Control Unit (the computer) will cure this. Take it to a Toyota dealer and have them replace it for free.

SOURCE: 99 toyota corrolla hood latch is broken. Can't

There is a rachet right below the hood that you can reach from radiator grill.
Take a long thin screw driver, reach it and turn that rachet.
You will hear the "click" sound and the hood will pop open.

94 Toyota 4runner with shifter in park it seems like in gear but will not move

Remove trans pan and check your manual valve it may be broken, or linkage problem, if no problem found then you will need to take a pressure reading but that may be out of your capabilities, have a shop check your trans and give you a diagnostic.

Transmission slow to shift out of 1st gear when cold

Owners of a Toyota 4Runner might panic when the gearshift begins to have problems. Knowing a couple of the things that often go wrong in a 4Runner can help a driver diagnose or even repair the gearshift himself. Following are some of the more common shifting problems with 4Runners, and a bit of information on what to do next.
Shift Solenoids

  • One of the leading causes of gearshift issues in automatic 4Runners is a bad "shift solenoid." In automatics, shifts are controlled by shift solenoids, electrical coils that change gears automatically. These solenoids can go bad over time and cause stuttering between gears, or prevent shifting beyond a certain gear. Shift solenoids can be purchased and replaced on your own. By consulting the owner's manual, you can determine the location on the valve body of your vehicle and check shift solenoids for breakage or rupturing. Replacing these on your own isn't terribly difficult, as long as you are certain the shift solenoid is the problem. Tutorials are available in car repair manuals and sometimes are posted online.

Transfer Case
  • When a 4Runner begins to have shifting problems, the transmission is often fingered immediately as the culprit. A driver might change the transmission fluid and filter, only to find that the car slips into the same shifting problems. Four-wheel-drive vehicles utilize a transfer case that ensures shifting between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. If a vehicle has a difficult time shifting into two-wheel or four-wheel-drive high, but works on four-wheel-drive low, examine the transfer case. Common problems include linkage breaks and worn gears.

Shift Lever Seat
  • Sometimes, the gearshift on a manual simply doesn't feel right. The vehicle might come out of gear too easily or have a problem upshifting or downshifting. The shift lever seat is the well in which the stick shift rests. After years of use, pieces might break off, bend or rust, causing problems with gearshifts that don't stay where they should or have a hard time getting there. Fixing your shift lever seat is quite simple and takes about 45 minutes. Once the boot cover and plate cover have been removed, you need only examine, remove debris, grease up, and reassemble. Such a fix can cost serious time and money at a mechanic, so try it on your own if you have the time and the proper equipment. The proper equipment includes a screwdriver and/or wrench to remove the boot cover and plate, a soft cloth to remove dirt, and grease for lubricating the shift lever.

Good Luck.

Hi Mr,
Sounds like you have a problem with the shift control unit. Take it and have a scan carried out and that should tell you exactly where your problem is.

I had the same problem on my '92 4runner and it was the 1-2 shift solenoid. The solenoids can be checked with an ohm meter but may read okay. Then while in service and warm, they will intermittently fail. I ended up changing the 1-2 shift solenoid and it solved the shift problem.

Blinking Orange Exclamation Point on 04 4runner

Since your question is listed as a 1999 Saturn SL and a Toyota 4Runner, I will answer both:

1999 Saturn SL
Typically the orange exclamation point dash warning light is indicating a problem with your brakes, parking or hand brake. Check to ensure that your emergency brake is completely disengaged.
Check to ensure proper brake fluid level.
Otherwise this could be indicating a problem with the ABS system.

04 Toyota 4Runner
Low tire air pressure. Inflate to approximately 32 PSI should correct your problem.

I hope this helps.
