the car will not roll backwards even with engine off and in

neutral or in any position of the shift lever.

when raised all wheels will spin freely in either

    direction.

It sounds like a problem with the reverse gear and you're probably going to have to have a transmission shop look at it,I'm assuming it locks when it's running and you shift into reverse.

You say it moves freely both directions, does it feel rough,a kind of grinding feel on either side when you spin it?If you have the car up pull the tires and spin both sides and feel for any hesitation or grinding, this may possibly be a bad wheel bearing but it's not very likely,I would still look towards the transaxle, the spider gears are the most likely cause.

This is a tranmission linkage problem. The car may be in park but the linkage arm well sometimes slip of or sometimes just run crooked as you switch through the gears. My car has also done the same thing until I recapped the arm with a new lock washer

Front left suspension noise when reversing

I think you will find its either your lower wish bone bushes need replacing OR its could be brake pads moving in housing as when going forward its the same way as disc goes but in reverse they slide backwards about 5mm if housing is worn ..
other wise you should be ok BUT
Chesk wishbone movement with all wheels on the ground not jacked up

1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.

1994 Toyota Camry automatic. All forward no reverse

are you sure it is first gear it is making when in 1. In park does the car lock up if you try to push it with the handbrake off. If not your problem is adjustment of the cable i.e. although the lever is in reverse the gearbox isn't.
Cheers John
