The transfer case can be switched electronically in which case it would have an electronic shift solenoid, yes.

No, the transfer case motor has to move a shift fork and it takes more than a solenoid can produce.

The newer Chevrolet's have electrical or vacuum switches, makes it easier for mom to drive, Can't you just see her in her dress and high heels locking in the front hubs and then "shove er into 4 wheel high" NOT. So yes and no. You have a button or rocker switch that turns on a little yellow light, you have an electrical solenoid, extra lever sticking up through the floor, no.. Todays SUV's are no more than up sized station wagons from the 60's and 70's and are more geared for soccer moms than they are for off roading, with their independent front (less articulation) suspension's, heated leather seats DVD in the back seat to entertain the little one's.

Sounds like possbly your old starter might have been good starting solinoide is bad, did you replace both starte and soliniode if not replace the starting soliniode should fix problem. If you bought a rebuild it might be bad. take it to Auto Zone they can test both the solinoide and starter.

Solinoid on hi low gear shifter only working when tapped with a hammer. Can i change just the solinoid or do i have to spilt the transfer case

You can replace just the electric shift motor. Either check local autoparts store or local Toyota dealer for correct part.

4 wheel drive lites up on switch but wont engage

Could be the front axel solinoid, [ the most common problem ], there are other things that can go wrong with this system such as transfer case encoder motor and sensors. Sou should have the system scanned to locate the problem.

Just a click? a solid click like the solinoid(bendix) is engaging? Two possible options, the solinoid is bad, or the starter motor is bad. If you have fair mechanical skill, you can try shorting around the soliniod with something. Be forewarned this can be dangerous. If it is the soliniod, sparks will fly as the starter tries to turn and unless you have something specifically made for it, it is likely whatever you are using will get hot! With the configuration of Jeep starters, you can use a screwdriver..... Or, take it out and have it tested...

1995 nissan maxima doesnt start when cold, just clicks, and after trying for 5 to 10 minutes it finally starts... Please help me out...

it is one of two things.
  • the starter is either worn and brushes not making contact or an engine oil leak onto the starter. thus keeping the brushes from making contact you can check this by banging on the starter while someone trys turning the ignition back and forth to start.(making the click click click)

  • ignition switch is weak, not providing enough voltage from the to kick the soliniod all the way to start the starter

The way to check that is to hot wire the starter soliniod little wire, to battery voltage. (the big cable on the solinoid)
If it turns over good, then you can either replace the ignition switch or install a relay someware near the starter to supply it with propper current to kick the solinoid all the way to engage the motor.
The relay acts as a remote starter switch that feeds more direct power to the starter solinoid. Now the only thing the ignition switch is responsible for, is trigger the relay.
