Why could my service engine soon light be on?

The service engine light is usually a cover-all light for your emissions control system. Anything that does meet the exact operating parameters of the engine computer turns this light on. Depending on the state you live in, it will also prevent you from passing your emissions test.
Remedy is to have a service station connect the computer to it, wherein it will read the offending code, and tell them what is out of whack and what needs fixing. Could be serious, could just be your gas cap is loose (yes, it measures the vacuum on your tank).
Good luck.

I got a 84 ford f 150 straight 6 300 manual. I cant get it to pass emission test . I heard that they were notaries for not passing. any good advice thanks.

Well they need to say why it failed ( unburned hydro carbons?) Check engine light on?, Visable smoke? Nitrogen oxide levels too high? If the light is'nt on and the truck runs good make sure the engine is good and warmewd up as you take it to be inspected. If you have to wait in line to be tested rev the engine at a faster than normal isel as you wait. a freash oil chage will also help. new spark plugs and any other overlooked for mileage driven services to up dated. engines that run too cool as the therostaate not leting the motor get hot enough to burn the fuel good. The air filter not being clean. turn the base idel up as high as you can drive it Ok. Maybe with these things followed it'll pass check and adjust the inghtion timing or set a little higher than stock may push this old motor to pass. Go to the test when their real busy and maybe they won't run all the tests and not catch the reson you failed this last time. Adjust the fuel mixture screw on the side of the carb to the smoothest possible idel and then screw it in till it just slows down and then turn the idel screw back up just enough to have it run at the same speed it ran smoothest at and smeel the ezhaust to see if you can smeel fuel if you can the fuel pump may be leaking fuel into the oil and it's showing up on the test.405553745.jpgThe fresh oil change may cover this as you take it to the test right after you change the oil. Ifthe oil smells like gas you know for shure but it might pass anyway if it's clean enough.

NO. just drive it a few days. the computer will keep testing it, and if it keeps passing the tests, it will turn off the light by itself.

Question regarding a honda odyssey 1999 check engine light codes.

P0420 relates to the catalytic converter. The computer sees little or no improvement in the exhaust before and after going through the converter. Either your oxygen sensors need replacement (3 total) or you need a new catalytic converter.
What is the mileage on the vehicle? Does it run well? Oxygen sensors generally start to fail after 70,000 miles. Catalytic converters usually fail because the engine is runnig rich and the owner ignores that fault for months. This causes the catalytic converter to overheat and fail.

P1456 relates to the evaporative emission system. This system holds the gas fumes in the system so they are not vented to the atmosphere. The most common cause of this code being set is failing to properly tighten the gas cap after refueling. Take the cap off and clean the sealing O-ring. Put it back on and tighten till it clicks 3 times. Make sure you have the correct gray colored gas cap. Clear the code and see if it resets within a few days. If it does, try replacing the gas cap.
