This is best fixed by replacing the cable as it is most likely frayed internally and jamming in the case.

I believe up shifter shaft that goes through the transmission case is seized you may have to remove the valve body to remove the shifter shaft to clean and lubricate but sometimes you can use lubricant on the outside and it may free up the shaft,you can unhook the shift cable to prove if it is just a worn cable or seized shaft

I am having a problem with my ignition

have you tried putting it in neutral then try to crank it or pull shifter up towards park. if it cranks ok then Neutral Safety Switch needs to be adjusted or maybe bad but first thing to do is clean your battery cables some times they look clean until you take them off.

Automatic not changing gears

check the shifter mechanism for binding up and not moving freely into positions. Not starting in park but in neutral indicates something is out of alignment with the shifter. May just need cleaning and a bit of oil/grease to fix.

Possible causes
- Faulty Park/Neutral Position Switch
- Misadjusted Park/Neutral Position Switch
- Park/Neutral Position Switch harness is open or shorted
- Park/Neutral Position Switch circuit poor electrical connection

2000 grand marquis shifter loos

your car has what is referred to as a Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS) located on the driver side of the trans-it is connected by cable to your shifter, and it is how you control the trans. It is mechanical AND electronic, with the position of the pawl and the electrical connector very important. It is not an expensive part and it not very difficult to replace held in place by 2 bolts. It is important that it be installed with the pawl and the shifter in neutral for alignment purposes. The part is sometimes referred to as a 'neutral saftey switch' and generic parts stores-around $45 or less total.

Dual gate Hurst shifter adjustment

Hello! Here is what I was able to track down:

Hurst Dual Gate Shifter Assembly Parts Breakdown:


Removing & Replacing The Hurst Dual/Gate
1. Disconnect car battery.

2. Remove Knob. Remove four Phillips head screws that hold escutcheon plate down to console.
NOTE: SHORT SCREW IS USED IN REAR RIGHT - HAND HOLE. Remove escutcheon plate and console from floor tunnel.

3. Lift selector indicator lamp housing out of shifter and pull bulb socket out of lamp housing. Disconnect wire connectors from combination Back - up light / Neutral safety switch.

4. Remove two 1/4 - 20 x 1/2 hex-head cap screws that fasten Dual / Gate shifter to rear mounting bracket. Remove 1/4 - 20 x 1/2 hex - head cap screw that holds cable bracket to shifter frame. Remove two #10 - 32 x 3/8 slotted head cap screws that fasten Dual / Gate shifter to front bracket. Free shifter from cable by removing cotter pin and washer.

5. Remove combination Neutral - safety / and Back - up light switch. Install switch on Replacement unit.

6. Install replacement shifter unit in reverse order of removal of original unit.

Loosen nut that fastens cable pin to transmission control arm. Loosen nut enough to allow pin to slide in the slot in the arm. Turn the arm to NEUTRAL position. Move the stick to NEUTRAL. Tighten the adjusting nut. Test movement of stick and check to be sure that stick positions agree with transmission control operation.

8. SEE FIGURE 2 (Below)
Connect car battery. Apply hand brake. Move stick to NEUTR AL position. Press foot on brake pedal. Start engine. If starter fails to operate, Neutral Safety switch must be adjusted. Adjustment is made with a long-bladed Phillips screwdriver through the "Street" gate. This screw is directly in front of the st ick. Turn the screw about 1/2 turn past the point where starter operates. (STICK MUST REMAIN IN "NEUTRAL" WHILE ADJUSTMENT IS MADE). Starter should operate ONLY when stick is in PARK or NEUTRAL position.

Van randomly will not turn over

Double check all your ground cable & + connections for clean, tight & in good shape. Sometimes just loosening them & wiggling them, then re-tightening will get better connection. Try moving shifter into neutral when this happens also, as well as turning key to start as you move shifter slowly through all gears to see if it try's even for a second to turn over. If moving shifter gets any sign of a kick over, it's probably safety neutral switch.
