Question about 2001 Ford Escape
EGR/Throttle position control range and performance.
basically the EGR (exhaust gas re-circulation) valve isn't opening in coordination with how much throttle is being applied, or how much the gas pedal is pressed. First recommended repair is to remove the egr valve, tap the bottom with a mallet to loosen the accumulated soot. Give it a shot of wd40 to ease free movement and reinstall. if that doesn't work you may need to replace.
