If you have a good battery, check your fuses. Then if you can, tap on the end of it with a hammer and try to start it. Could be a bad starter.
Also check your key if its one with the security deal in the head. Buddy lost his and his truck wouldn't start at all til he got a new key.

2002 ford tarus cranks but wont start. 32000 miles. I did not drive much during the last 6 months. I started it and it ran fine drove to a neighbors house when i tried to start it cranked but would not...

First, verify that there is gas in the vehicle. Next, listen for the pump to energize when you turn the ignition switch to the on position. If you dont hear anything, check the fuel pump relay. Swap it with another one next to it, they are often the same part. If it still doesn't energize, its most likely the pump thats failed. If you hear the pump energize, then the pump pressure needs to be checked. A fuel gauge needs to be connected under the hood on the fuel rail to read system pressure. Verify that its at factory specs. If not, replace the pump.

The 98 explorer starts fine, most of the time.

Sound like you have a starter that starting to go out, the easy way to check it is when it only clicks have some one try to start it and you tap on the starter if it starts replace it, starter going bad.

Cannot start

have someone turn the key to start it... and smack the starter with a hammer... if it starts it's the starter needing replacement

Check your battery terminals,,make sure they are tight, then if you need to go further, have the starter motor checked out.
Try a jump start anyway,,

High pitch noise when turn key to start / engine not turning over

Check your battery first. Cold weather does horrible things to car batteries... if it's more of a grinding sound I would say that your starter gear is bad. I believe they call it a ring gear? I had a similar problem with a kushman scooter that I use to deliver snowcones through the neighborhoods. It has teeth that need to engage and if those teeth have been grinded down it will have a hard time engaging....
