Question about 1994 Cadillac Eldorado

Overheating car i just put on a new radiator and water hose and my car is still overheating my dashboard will tell me the engine coolant level or engine running hot and stop engine now i have anti-freeze in the car and i want to know why is it doing that or do i need new thermostat or water pump

Maybe you have a blown head gasket your leaking head gasket when ur car is cold open your radiator cap see if the coolant in it try to tap up coolant until the neck of your radiator then start your engine and observe the radiator neck if the collant puks it out if your coolant is pukking out meaning you have a leak or blown head gasket and thats the cuz of your overheating

If you have air bubbles in your coolant lines expecially around the thermostat the air bubble will give false readings, if there isnt any air bubbles replase your thermostat and look for any external leaking, if still not fixed check antifreeze again and look for oil in your coolant, if there is, take the vehicle to the neares certified mechanic and be prepared to spend up to $2000 parts and labor

Are you sure it's not air locked? Run it with the rad cap off and keep watching the water level. It might go up and down and then finally drop. Maybe even try letting some air out of one of your heater hoses if you can.

Yes, replace the thermostat. Then you need to 'burp the coolant system'. Your car has all the hallmarks of air in the system, especially a heater that is cold. This is because there is no water in the heater matrix. This is why it overheats. The system must be full and with no air to circulate correctly through the radiator.

Burping involves the following steps.

Remove the lid to the reservoir, remove the radiator cap, fill the radiator to the top, turn heating on full blast, start engine and get to operating temperature, keep topping up. Squeezing the radiator hoses helps. The level will rise and then drop when the thermostat opens. Top up when bubbles stop and the level becomes constant. Put radiator cap on, top up the reservoir and put the cap on that.

How long has it been going on? You need to check if you have a bad head gasket. A compression test of the cylinders would tell you. Not saying that's what it is, but that can be a cause of overheating. And it can also be an expensive result of prolonged overheating. That's why mechanics caution against running an overheating engine. If you find the head gasket is good, it will give you great peace of mind, knowing the Shadow's engine warrants a few more dollars in repairs. Compared to the cost of a new head gasket and having the head checked for straightness and for cracks, other repairs for overheating is minimal.
First check the coolant level and keep it full. It could be a worn water pump. Feel for pressure behind the coolant when you squeeze the upper radiator hose for a second or two. The engine needs to be warmed up and running, so the thermostat is open. Try to squeeze the hose closed, then let off and feel for a surge of coolant, and watch the coolant in the radiator for pressure pushing coolant on through the radiator. Kind of a rough test if pump is circulating coolant. You might also try a new thermostat. They are cheap and easy to replace. Clean the outside of the radiator of leaves or dirt. It should be checked for blockage. When upper hose is hot, the lower hose should also be hot or quite warm, just not as hot as the upper hose. If it is, radiator seems not blocked.
Don't worry about having no heat at this time. When the overheating is solved, and coolant level is full, the heater will return.

Overheating after replacing thermostat


If it over heated before the thermostat, replace the radiator cap. Make sure the coolant (recommend just water until this is fixed) is full. When disconnecting the upper hose you lose all the coolant from the engine and about 1/3 of the coolant in the radiator. If you only full the radiator you don't have enough water. The new remonstrate needs to open for you to get enough water. In short- take radiator cap off. Start the engine. Fill radiator. Watch level for 5min, filling as needed.

How do i put water in my radiator?


you need to replace thermostat and radiator cap.look under hood around engine compartment.look for a radiator cap near radiator,add 50/50 antifreeze and water to coolant system to bring up boiling point.pure water will cause engine run hotter because water evaporate away,remove radiator pour coolant in the radiator until coolant stop dropping in the radiator now some vechicle pour coolant in the coolant overflow jug,pour coolant until coolant level stop dropping and the coolant level stay at cold full mark.start engie let idle few minutes, watch coolant level in radiator if coolant start dropping add more coolant, when coolant level stop dropping put radiator cap back on let engine idle until both top radaitor hose and bottom coolant hose get warm turn off engine wait until it get cool then take a large rag slightly open radiator just a litle at a time to keep from getting scaled.once radiator remove add more coolant if low,put radiator cap back on start the engine let it idle watch the temp gauge if temperature gauge going hot zone stop engine wait until cool then add more coolant,keep doing this until engine stop overheating going into hot zone and coolant level stop dropping,make the coolant overflow jug coolant level stay at full cold mark, dont let jug run empty if so air will get in the coolant system causing engine to overheat.

Took out the thermostat, replaced the radiator, the water is circulating in the radiator but it is still running hot. what do i do next?

    Faulty Radiator
  1. A car that overheats will often have a faulty radiator. A radiator is responsible for cooling hot engine coolant that picks up heat from inside a car's running engine.   3. A faulty or malfunctioning water pump prevents adequate engine coolant flow and can cause a car to overheat. A faulty water pump loses its ability to adequately pump and propel engine coolant, and can cause a car to overheat.
  4. Coolant System Leaks
  5. A leaky engine coolant system reduces the level of circulating engine coolant, which increases engine temperature and leads to engine overheating. Radiators, water pumps, and coolant system hoses and seals--all of these coolant system parts can develop leaks, which can result in low coolant levels and engine overheating.
  6. Faulty Thermostat
  7. A car thermostat regulates the flow of engine coolant. A thermostat is a heat-sensitive valve that opens when a car engine reaches a set operating temperature and closes when a car engine is cold and warming up. If a thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant will be prevented from reaching the engine, which will quickly lead to engine overheating and potential engine damage.
  8. Low Engine Oil Level
  9. Engine oil, in addition to lubricating an engine's internal parts, helps to keep engine operating temperatures reduced by eliminating friction within the engine. If engine oil levels are low, friction and heat build up inside an engine, a condition that causes increased engine operating temperatures and can lead to engine overheating.

WELL YOU NEED TO DRAIN COOLANT LEVEL BELOW THERMOSTAT LEVEL.YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT MAF SENSOR LOOSEN AIRDUCT 2 LARGE CLAMPS LOOSEN REMOVE 4 SCREWS TO AIR FILTER COVER LIFT UP REMOVE COVER. My 1997 Dodge Intrepid overheats. I've replaced the thermostat, and it continues to overheat. I noticed adjacent to one of the radiator hoses, a ribbed hose that is split. Could this cause the car to...


Now that you've eliminated the thermostat, it could be a number of other things. Don't drive the car too far until you've fixed the overheating problem - overheating can destroy an engine.

That split ribbed hose you see is plastic wire loom - it carries and protects electrical wires, and is not the cause of overheating.

1. Low coolant level
2. Radiator hose split/cracked, causing low coolant level.
3. Head Gasket - leaking, causing low coolant level
4. Thermostat - stuck closed (you eliminated this possibility)
5. Radiator cap - worn/damaged
6. Radiator fins - obstructed by debris/cardboard
7. Water Pump belt - missing/broken
8. Heater Core - leaking, causing low coolant level
9. Intake Manifold Gasket - leaking, worn, damaged
10. Radiator Fan Relay - faulty
11. Radiator Fan Blade - broken, missing
12. Radiator Fan Sensor/Switch - faulty
13. Water Pump - leaking, causing low coolant level
14. Radiator Fan Motor - faulty

My primary suspects would be Rad Fan Relay (#10), and
Rad Fan Switch (#12).

since this vehicle has a thermal clutch fan I'd start there

are ALL the hoses getting hot?
  • upper rad hose
  • lower rad hose
  • heater hoses
does the overheating reduce when you turn on the heat at full speed

1995 legacy 250t wagon - overheating


Two possiblities; a blown head gasket, or a freeze plug leaking. If possible take it to a trusted shop and have the pressure checked on the radiator, they can tell you if your radiator is stopped up, or the freeze plug is leaking, and if it's blowing back in the radiator when you remove the cap then it's a blown head gasket.
