Why did this happen all of a sudden, Overheating (maybe) and RPM Sensor Pointing down?

When I went to get in my car this morning, I noticed that the temperature gauge jumped up pass the red danger zone and was pointing to 260, I also noticed that I was low on gas at the time and when my fuel light came on, the RPM started pointing to it. At first I thought it was a neat trick to let the driver know it needed gas, but when I went to go fuel it up it still pointed down. While I was making my way back home, I noticed that the car (still at the 260 temperature mark) kinda of made a swishing and short bubble like noise within the system. Mechanics were telling me to replace the temperature gauge so I don't know whats happening. Anyone have any clues.

If the noise was coming from the cooling system, first try to replace the radiator or expansion bottle pressure cap. The RPM needle probably is unrelate to the cooling system problem.

SOURCE: My temp. gauge is sporatic.

There are two things that would cause this a bad coolant temp sensor or the guage is bad, this cars had alot of problem with the cluster, the gauges would do crazy things the most common would be the fuel gauge and temp gauge, i would start by replacing the coolant temp sensor and making sure the wiring to sensor is good and not frayed and touch any metal, hope this is helpful.

1: a full compression test and leak down test is , needed first.
2: then spark tests, or new spark plugs and boots
3: and fueling tests. lots even bad fuel, low fuel pressure ,etc.
the CATs don;t just fail/good;/fail/good. never.

the cause of overheating must be found. and the cure for any overheating damage,
lacking tools and skills , ? check fuses.
in the morning dead cold engine only, OFF the RAD cap, must be full UP of 50% antifreeze (not water) or it will overheat.

Check engine light, but no obvious problems

Good chance it is temp sensor, but have the codes scanned and that will tell you for sure. Another sensor I have run across could be oxygen sensor, sometimes they will make the vehicle run bad and sometimes they dont but in either case is does affect fuel mileage. Dont think either way you need to avoid driving your car unless maybe temp sensor showed overheating problem. But dont wait too long to get code scanned.
