The engine is controlled by a computer, the computer is now getting bad readings from the O2 sensor, some are located in the cat, or just before it. wich will also efect the egr valve and posably the map sencer

SOURCE: Catylitic Converter is not fully consuming unspent fuel

This is an expensive repair...catalytic coverters need replacing if everything else checks out on the car.  However, a loose oxygen sensor lead would make the car running rich

SOURCE: I want to remove the catalytic converter. How do

You cannot bypass the catalytic converter and expect the car to run properly and the check engine light to remain off. When you go to replace the cat, DO NOT attempt to use an aftermarket brand. Even many of the "OEM" aftermarket converters do not have sufficient back pressure and within 2 months they are ruined. I know, I have replaced mine that was purchased at Advance Auto Parts three times in the last six months! Shell out the money for an original Mazda converter. List is about $736.50, but you can find a dealer in Virginia that discounts them 20% down to $589.08. Just remember, the car's computer is programmed to read the O2 sensors' data and adjust accoringly. A new Mazda cat will allow your car to run like it did when it came off the assembly line, everything else equal.

Might be your coolant temp. sensor. Also, does your suburban have two oxygen sensors? Many cars have one in front of catalytic converter for computer fuel requirements, and another behind the cat., mainly used to measure health of the cat.

I have a 1997 chevy k1500 and i was wondering if it would run if i gutted the catalytic converter or took it completley off?

yes, it should run, but you'll have an engine light on because your downstream O2 sensor will think there's a miss fire.

Diagram for replacing o2 sensor

No diagram, but look for a spark-plug-like device with several wires coming out of the top located just in front of each catalytic converter in the exhaust system. Check with your auto parts dealer for the special socket that assists in replacing these items--usually not an expensive tool. It's a simple remove and replace procedure. A trip to Autozone or similar business to use their scanner to turn off the 'check engine' light when done. Hope this helps!

You should have 5, O2 sensors on your Sirera. What are the DTC codes, each codes will indicate which O2 sensor needs to be addressed, or is this an answer with someone guess what the check engine light is saying.
Thye check engine light could be from a bad O2 sensor to just a bad or loose gas cap to a transmission issues.
Thank you for using fixya and note that Auto Zone and most larger auto parts store will scan DTC codes free of charge.

start by checking fuel filter /pump for proper pressure -small vacuum leak--if good check air filter--other areas are unbolt egr valve check for carbon build up[if not frozen can use a carb/solvent to clean ] cat convert starting to clog/or restriction in exhaust--distributor off or rotor & cap these are a few of the most common problems good luck

Approx.50# fuel pressure at test port, engine will only start with starting fluid and then die.

I worked on a 1999 Suburban a couple weeks ago, it had good fuel pressure and spark but wouldn't run. No check engine light. It turned out the catalytic converters were plugged. After I took the exhaust pipes loose at the manifold it started right up. Just a thought.
