Chances are your themos sensor is not working, Check for water leaks, check your oil for signs of water, if so ,your head gasket is shot.
Surely have have a problem circulating the water, this could be for many reasons.
ie: loose belts, water pump, thermostat, clogged radiator, lack of water, faulty temp. gauge.. your car knocks because the timing advances
when it overheats.

RADIATOR COOLING FAN NOT RUNNING COULD BE BAD ENGINE.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS FAULTY IF COOLING FAN IS NOT TURNING ON AT SET TEMPERATURE OF 196 TO 203 DEGRESS.CHECK SEE COOLING FAN RUNNING WHEN ENGINE RUNNING HOT.IF YES FLUSH RADIATOR , FLUSH ENGINE BLOCK, HEATER CORE,REPLACE RADIATOR CAP.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM.CHECK WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP. IF COOLANT FAN DONT TURN ON 196 TO 203 DEGREES, YOU HAVE FAULTY COOLING FAN,SHORT IN FAN WIRING OR ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.IGNITION TIMING WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.

I have 1998 740i BMW that is overheating. 1) What are the warning signs of a bad water pump? 2) What are the warning signs of a blown head gasket? 3) What are the warning signs of bad timing?

Timing - engine is not sounding right or back firing.
Head gasket - water and oil mixing, see inside water bottle. or open bottle. rev engine when cold, if starts spitting water out while cold like a fountain.
Water pump - Water leaking from side of engine. or when car started and water bottle is open and no circulation is visible could be signs of water pump
Remember - Block radiator lines can also cause over heating problems and lack of water circulation.

My car is over heating and cokkent oil is leaking

Cars generally overhead when engine coolant is below acceptable levels. That can be caused from leakage, blockage or equipment malfunction.

  • Inspect coolant level in the vehicle's reservoir or radiator.
  • Inspect radiator and heater hoses for cracking causing leaking.
  • Inspect the radiator for leaking.
  • Inspect the inside of radiator for smudge build-up, a sure sign that the water jackets might be restricted.
  • Inspect water pump for leaking or broken belt (serpentine belt)
  • Check to ensure water pump properly functioning, does the pump's pulley turn?
Repair or replace any faulty item.

Leaking anti freeze

You need to isolated the location of the coolant leak. Check the radiator, hoses, and water pump for leaks. The water pump should have a vent or "weep" hole. If there is any coolant leaking from the hole, the water pump is defective. When checking the hoses, look for cracks or obvious signs of deterioration. Pay particular attention to areas where the hose clamps are located when looking for leaks. Overheating and coolant loss can also be caused by a faulty thermostat. The thing is that you need to find out where the problem is before it can be addressed properly. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Nissan 350z.2004.overheating problems./changed fan and radiator .still gets past midway at times... has 2 thermostats. tossed one out wherers the second one located??live in fla the hottest place

I am not aware that there are indeed two thermostats on the 350Z. I would be more suspicious of the water pump causing the overheating problem. Is the water pump leaking? Leaking is a sure sign that the water pump is defective, but I have seen water pumps that were not leaking, but were still faulty because they were partially clogged up. Anyway, hope this helps and best wishes.

My car is overheating for some reason. I got an oil change the other day, and as soon as i got it, it started to run hot. I have a 4.6L V8 with at least over 200K.

First look for signs of coolant leakage at the water pump, radiator hoses, thermostat, transmission coolant lines, and intake gasket. If you're leaking at the water pump replace it. If you have no coolant loss check to see if your coolant fan is coming on. If all is fine then you probably have a faulty thermostat. If it still overheats you may have a blocked radiator core.
