How can i tell if i have abs brakes or not on 96 maxima?

all anwers USA< other cars are DIFFERENT> 96 CAD usa.
it auto resets at every keyon.
get the FSM and read the ABS chapter. it tells you that and that it needs a special scan tool to find all issues.
if frisky pull the battery neg, lug, wait 5min,, or turn on head lights and foot brake if in hurry,, I never am.
and put back the neg lug. this will make the ABS start virgin.

why not post the symptoms. my light is on, why>/
1: brakes are bad. do a brake job.
2: scan the ABS see the errors. and the tests.

Thats a big possibility. The abs light is on telling the driver the abs system is disabled. And the regular brake light could be on because the parking brake is not released.

With or without ABS? Or does the master cylinder have two or four lines coming out it? I have a feeling you have a bad masterclinder. The lines on a non abs are cross proportional, meaning one front and one rear are supplied fluid by one part of the master and the other two are supplied by the other. Try cracking the lines loose on the master cylinder and pressing down on the brake pedal. Try this for ll the lines making sure to tighten the fitting before letting up on the pedal ( just like if you where bleeding the brakes at the wheels). If no luid comes out than you just confirmed a bad mastercylinder.

Most likley problem is your brake light switch. go underneath the dash to the brake pedal and depending on wether you have cruise control or not ther will be one or two sensors there. the black sensor should be the brake light switch. disconnect and jump the connector with a paper clip and see if the brake lights comeon and the shifter will move.

the module is bad. needs a new abs pump. to temporary remedy it find the pump and disconnect its plug. be careful as the abs now is not working ( not that it was before) and incase of full breaking car will lock and slide tires. take it to a shop to get replaced.

ABS was optional as an add-on for the GXE Model so I can't say whether you have them or not based on the model. When you turn your key to the on position before starting the car, if you see an ABS light, then your car will have abs. If there is no light, then most likely you do not have abs.
