Neutral Safety/Back-up Light Switch

This is a combination switch which controls both Neutral Safety and Back-up lamp circuits.

C6 neutral start switch

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the downshift linkage rod return spring at the low-reverse servo cover.
  4. Coat the outer lever attaching nut with penetrating oil. Remove the nut and lever.
  5. Remove the 2 switch attaching bolts, disconnect the wiring at the connectors and remove the switch.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the switch and tighten the bolts to 55-75 inch lbs. (6.2-8.5 Nm).
  7. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removing the AOD neutral start switch
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Disconnect the wiring from the switch.
  4. Using a deep socket, unscrew the switch.
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the switch to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  6. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removing the Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor

As of 1994, the neutral safety switch is referred to as a Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLP).
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Disengage the harness connector from the MLP sensor.
  4. Remove the 2 sensor attaching bolts and remove the sensor.
To install:
  1. Install the MLP sensor and install retaining bolts. Do not tighten, the sensor requires adjustment.
  2. Adjust the MLP sensor then tighten attaching screws to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  3. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.


ADJUSTMENT

C6 Transmission
  1. Hold the steering column transmission selector lever against the Neutral stop.
  2. Move the sliding block assembly on the neutral switch to the Neutral position and insert a 0.091 in. (2.3mm) gauge pin in the alignment hole on the terminal side of the switch.
  3. Move the switch assembly housing so that the sliding block contacts the actuating pin lever. Secure the switch to the outer tube of the steering column and remove the gauge pin.
  4. Check the operation of the switch. The engine should only start in Neutral and Park .

Adjusting the MLP sensor

Park is the last detent when the manual control lever is full forward. Return 2 detents toward the output shaft for Neutral.
  1. Position the manual control lever in Neutral .
  2. Insert Gear Position Sensor Adjuster tool T93P-700 10-A or equivalent, into the slots.
  3. Align all 3 slots on the MLP sensor with 3 tabs on the tool.
  4. Tighten the attaching screws to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).

The main reason for this concern, especially if the door is used quite often and/or the vehicle has higher mileage is a break in the wiring going from the drivers door to the body. If you access this area by pulling the protective rubber back, shine a flashlight on these wires and look for a break (open circuit). look for shiny spots from the open copper wire. The stress from the door opening and closing is what causes the break and often you will find more than one broken wire. It will usually be a heavier gauge wire that doesn't flex as easily. Ford Neutral Safety Switch; Ford Reverse Light Switch; Backup Light Switch.

The Neutral Safety Switch wires in my 1971 Ford F100 are orange with a blue stripe.
The Reverse, or Backup Light Switch wires are black with a red stripe.

There are two sets of two wires across this combined neutral safety and backup light switch, for a total of 4 wires. Photos are at the end of this post.

The switch for the 1971 Ford F100 pickup truck is the same as in many other years and models. For details, including parts numbers, see the following quote from an expert at Ford Truck Enthusiasts:

The neutral switch also controls the backup lights, and is the same 1967/77.

There is no separate backup light switch..except on 1967/68 F350's.

Neutral switch location 1967/77:

The plastic half moon shaped neutral safety switch mounts on the outside lower portion of the steering column (NOT on the transmission!).

It's activated by an inverted Y shaped lever that snaps on the shift tube

Ignition switch


The switch can be tested with a multi-meter to see if it is the problem. The switch will have a hot at all times wire going into it. If the switch has power out on the start wire with key held in crank, or if there is continuity between the power in wire terminal and the start wire terminal (on the switch side of harness connector) when the key is held in crank, then the switch is good. Check the neutral safety switch, then the starter relay, then the starter solenoid for a fault. You may need to see a wiring diagram to find the color of the start wire coming out of the switch. A single wire from switch to the neutral safety switch and on to the starter solenoid.

Power goes from ignition switch to neutral safety switch then to starter. Neutral safety switch used to be on steering column. Find wire harness for switch. Verify power is coming to harness when key is in start position. If not then bad ign switch or blown fuse. If power is coming to neutral safety switch but not going to starter then either bad switch or out of adjustment. Try putting car in neutral and starting then back to park. Or you have funky aftermarket alarm that is disabling starter. Also if car was financed thru small car dealership they may have put gps with starter disable on it. This helps remind you that payment is due. You can run jumper wire to starter solenoid to make starter turn over. That would be the small terminal.

Truck won't start unless i jiggle wires under dash.


I doubt it unless you are moving the wires coming out of the switch.
Sounds like a bad connection or broken wire in the harness you are moving around.
It could involve the neutral safety switch and the harness you are moving could come from that switch.

I have a chevy 305 with an older transmission with no neutral safety. The starter that i have has 3 prongs the only way to have the system work is to short the starter and it will start the engine is there...


The neutral safety switch is on the transmission not the starter. If you suspect it's not working, simply unplug it. Just REMEMBER that the truck will now start in ANY gear not just park or neutral. Hope this helps.

your linkage might need adjustment would not advise to bypass switch as it will start in ANY GEAR AND MIGHT CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH suggest replacement of safety switch not that expensive

Bronco wont start 88 ford bronco just replaced tranny and now won't start. i've hooked everything back up but one of the wires to the transfer case bc i broke the plug in. any ideas why it wont start...


The neutral safety switch is located on the side of the transmission and it is usually attached behind the shifter linkage and it is secured with two small bolts that can be loosened up to allow for adjustment of the neutral safety switch.

To adjust the neutral safety switch place the transmission into neutral, (block the tires) there is a notch or and indent marker on the housing of the neutral safety switch that should be lined up with a line on the face of the collar that is around the shifter detent shaft, and if they are not in alignment then loosen the two bolts that secure the neutral safety switch and then turn the neutral safety switch until they are aligned and then tighten the securing bolts to the neutral safety switch, and then test the starter. If the starter fails to engage then either the neutral safety switch is faulty, the neutral safety switch has been by-passed all this time and the by-pass (I will usually find things like a paper clip shoved into the vehicles wire connector with electrical tape around it) has fallen out of the wire connector from the vehicle wiring harness, or the battery just went dead. if you have the neutral safety switch from the old transmission still available try using it to test the neutral safety circuit. I have provided you with an image to help assist you adjust the neutral safety switch.

Car wont start


The Ford dealer or a junk yard would be my suggestions for obtaining that harness. you should be able to bypass the switch by connecting the white/pink wire with the red/light blue wire in the harness.
For safety's sake, only do this as a temporary measure.
