The input speed sensor (ISS) is a hall-effect type sensor. The sensor faces the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing machined teeth surface. The sensor receives 8.3-9.3 volts on the input/output speed sensor (ISS/OSS) supply voltage circuit from the transmission control module (TCM). As the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing rotates, the sensor produces a signal frequency based on the machined surface of the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch housing. This signal is transmitted through the ISS signal circuit to the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly. The control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly uses the ISS signal to determine line pressure, transmission shift patterns, torque converter clutch (TCC) slip speed and gear ratio.
Engine idling, observe the scan tool Transmission ISS parameter while varying the engine speed. The Transmission ISS parameter should change with the engine speed and not drop out.
Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Ignition OFF, remove the control valve body cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement.
Connect the TCM harness connector.
Disconnect the input speed sensor (ISS) from the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly.
Connect the J 38522 between the supply voltage terminal B and ISS signal terminal A at the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly. Refer to Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Input Shaft Speed/Output Shaft Speed Input Test for further instructions.
Set the J 38522 signal to 8 volts, the frequency to 120 and the percent duty cycle to 50.
Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Transmission ISS parameter. The scan tool Transmission ISS parameter should be between 100-400 RPM.
? If not within the specified range, replace the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly.
If all circuits test normal, test or replace the input speed sensor.
Control Valve Body Cover Replacement
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement.
Remove the oil cooler inlet hose (1) from the retainer on the control valve body cover.
Remove the oil cooler outlet hose retainer nut (5) from the control valve body cover.
Remove the oil cooler outlet hose (4) from the retainer on the control valve body cover.
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Remove the left engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement.
Drain the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement.

DTC P0716: Input Speed Sensor Performance
DTC P0717: Input Speed Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
The automatic transmission input speed sensor (ISS) is a permanent magnet with a coil of wire wound around. The ISS mounts in the case cover facing the reluctor wheel of the input shaft. As the reluctor wheel is driven by the turbine shaft, an AC signal is induced in the input speed sensor. Higher vehicle speeds induce a higher frequency and voltage at the sensor. There is a fixed air gap between the sensor and the teeth on the sensor reluctor wheel. The ISS input is used by the transmission control module (TCM) in order to control line pressure, torque converter clutch (TCC) apply and release, and transmission shift patterns. This sensor is also used to calculate the appropriate gear ratios and TCC slippage. This diagnostic indicates stuck, erratic, or intermittent conditions in the system.
• Road test the vehicle while monitoring the Transmission ISS parameter on the scan tool. The Transmission ISS parameter should vary with engine speed changes and not abruptly drop out.
• Inspect for an open or shorted AT ISS wire.
• Inspect for a disconnected AT ISS connector.
• Inspect for a faulty AT ISS.

Input speed sensor is located inside the transmission. The sensor is located next to the sprocket for the input shaft. The sensor is held in place with 2 6mm bolts, one for the sensor, one for the wiring harness.
P0717 is for the transmission input speed sensor , which inturn will bring up the other code P0700 for the Trans Control Module , so i would suggest having the codes cleared and see if they come back as sometimes a glitch can occour , if codes reappear and so do the symptoms i would replace the input speed sensor , it reads the primary pulley speed and sends info to the TCM and as far as i know there are no diagnostic s to carry out as this sensor either works properly or fails so get it changed and hope its not the TCM as well, keep me posted if you wish
input speed sensor for transmission is faulty which will throw the 717 code and when it does it will also tell "root" TCM (transaxle control module) to include the 700 code.
700 happens when it detects an issue with the TCM.
717 happens when the sensor is bad.

P0717 code means that the computer isn't getting any signal from the
sensor. Either the sensor is dead or there's a circuit issue (bad
The computer wants to know if the transmission is working properly. So
it reads the speed of the input shaft and compares it to the speed of
the output shaft. It knows which gear you're in because it commanded the
transmission to shift into that gear. So, with the input speed, the
gear selection, and the output speed, the computer can calculate how
efficiently the transmission is working. If the speed is off, it knows
that something is slipping inside the transmission. It can then try to
boost the fluid pressure to compensate. If that doesn't work, it sets a
different trouble code.

P0717: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal. This code shows because the computer isn't getting any signal from the sensor. Either the sensor is dead or there's a circuit issue (bad wiring, etc).
The Input/Turbine Speed Sensor is the sensor the computer uses to to monitor the the efficiency of the transmission. The computer reads the speed from the input shaft and compares it to the speed of the output shaft. If the speed is off it attempts to correct it by boosting the fluid pressure to
compensate. When that fails it trips the P0717 error code. In most cases either the sensor is dead or there's a problem in the wiring harness.
There are issue of intermittent connection trouble with this circuit. That would cause the on off problem. Hope this helps.
