99 volkswagon beetle check engine llight is on. the scanner tool said cold start sensor?? what could that mean? approx. how much at the most will it cost? PLEASE HELP

This is the sensor that control cold start up idle just like a choke use to do on the old carborated systems. It allows for the car to idle slightly higher and tells the ccu to adjust the air to fuel ratio for cold starting. Since it is a volkswagen it could be rather expensive.

Emission light stays on and uses more petrol than before, car still runs fine except the fuel consumption. i have a clio extreme 04 plate. is it the lambda sensor or am i barking up wrong tree please advise...

perhaps a tune up is in order as well as check all vacuum lines for dry-rot causing it to ****-air it will contribute to fuel consumption as it takes more fuel to stay running as well it may be a hi idle or choke sensor Midas and a few parts stores offer a free scan if your ck engine light stays on

High fuel consumption

change o2 sensors every 60,000 miles and use iridium plugs they will outlast engine.
check engine light will not come on until sensors are completely shot, this also goes for your mass air flow, had same issues with 99 beetle happened at 80,000 miles, changed all three items ended up with 35mpg after getting 24mpg before are cheap on ebay.
