Could be caused by a corroded central grounding point or a blown fuse.

It's normal for the instrument lights (including the overhead panel) to dim when headlights are turned on but this should not affect the dome or courtesy lights.

When I turn on my head lights my dash board goes dark. Turn off headlights the dash lights come back on. Any ideas what is causing this?

Check where the brightness adjuster is for your instrument panel lighting on your vehicle because there will be one. Sounds from what you have said that this is being moved each time you are turning on and off the headlights because they are totally separate controls.

2006 Kia Sorento dash lights go off and on

Sounds like the connection behind the instrument cluster is loose, i had a customer with the same problem only on a 2012 camry and it turned out to be the connection on the cluster. I just adjusted the tension on the connection by bending the contact pins a little.
