SOURCE: what does fault code ECM - 250A long term - fuel trim:upper limit on 2004 volvo S40 mean

Sound like a problem with the MAF sensor, try replace.

Pulled codes for ECM-250A long term fuel trim upper limit, inspected and found air mass sensor failing internally, should show 4 f/s at idle and is showing 2.98 f/s at idle. Recommend replacing with new.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

• DTC P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1
• DTC P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 2
.
The engine control module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without oxygen sensor (O2S) input. During Closed Loop, the O2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim (FT) fuel delivery adjustments. If the O2S indicates a lean condition, FT values will be above 0 percent. If the O2S indicate a rich condition, FT values will be below 0 percent. Short term FT values change rapidly in response to the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage signals. Long term FT makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. If the ECM detects an excessively lean condition, DTC P0171 or P0174 sets.
Diagnostic Aids
• Excessive resistance in the fuel injector ignition 1 voltage circuit or the fuel injector control circuit may cause the following symptoms:
- Lean condition
- Misfire
- Rough idle
• The system will go lean if an injector is not suppling enough fuel.
• A lean condition could be present during high fuel demand.
• A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause this DTC to set. Refer to DTC P0101 .
• Review the Failure Records with a scan. If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions .

DTC Descriptors

• DTC P0420 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1
• DTC P0430 Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2

2001 chevy tahoe code po440, po171

DTC P0171 or P0174
Circuit Description
The powertrain control module (PCM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy, and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during open and closed loop. During open loop, the PCM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without oxygen sensor input. During closed loop, the oxygen sensor inputs are added and used by the PCM to calculate short and long term fuel trim fuel delivery adjustments. If the oxygen sensors indicate a lean condition, fuel trim values will be above 0 percent. If the oxygen sensors indicate a rich condition, fuel trim values will be below 0 percent. Short term fuel trim values change rapidly in response to the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage signals. Long term fuel trim makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7:1. If the PCM detects an excessively lean condition, this DTC will set.

Diagnostic Aids
• The system will go lean if an injector is not supplying enough fuel.
• A lean condition could be present during high fuel demand due to a fuel pump that does not pump enough fuel.
• Use a scan tool in order to review the Failure Records . If an intermittent condition is suspected, refer to Intermittent Conditions .
With every DTC a diagnostic flow chart is given for a diagnostic direction .(thing's to test ) For these test's you need a professional or factory scanner ! Plus knowledge of how these system's work would be nice .

Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
If conditions were not corrected, refer to Fuel System Diagnosis for a possible fuel problem.
If conditions were not corrected, a worn cam, worn intake or exhaust valves, or other engine mechanical failure may be the problem.

DTC P0440
The EVAP LARGE LEAK TEST is based on applying vacuum to the EVAP system and monitoring the rate of vacuum decay. The powertrain control module (PCM) uses the input from the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor in order to determine the rate of vacuum decay. At an appropriate time, the PCM turns the EVAP canister purge valve ON (open) and the EVAP canister vent valve ON (closed). This allows the engine to draw a vacuum on the system. At a calibrated time or vacuum level, the PCM turns the purge valve OFF (closed), and tests the system vacuum. If the system is unable to achieve the calibrated vacuum level, the PCM will set DTC P0440.
This could be caused by a leaking purge valve . Do you know what that is ? Mounted on the engine ,under the plastic engine cover . Disconnect the hose that goes to the vapor canister under the back of the vehicle . With the engine running see if you can feel vacuumn . If you do replace it .

Code P2187 on 2008 Suzuki Forenza

DTC P2187: Fuel Trim System Lean at Idle

Fuel Trim Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the air/fuel metering system in order to provide the best possible combination of driveability, fuel economy and emission control. Fuel delivery is controlled differently during Open and Closed Loop. During Open Loop, the ECM determines fuel delivery based on sensor signals without Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) input. During Closed Loop, the HO2S inputs are added and used by the ECM to calculate short and long term fuel trim fuel delivery adjustments. If the HO2S indicate a lean condition, fuel trim values will be above 0%. If the Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) indicate a rich condition, fuel trim values will be below 0%. Short term fuel trim values change rapidly in response to the HO2S signals. Long term fuel trim makes coarse adjustments in order to maintain an air/fuel ratio of 14.7 : 1.

This code can only set when the engine control is in Closed Loop. The engine must be fully warmed up.

This must be diagnosed using a scan tool that can read engine data in order to determine the actual cause of the problem. It can be caused by the following things:

> Vacuum leaks
> Malfunctioning, dirty, or skewed Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)
> Malfunctioning or skewed Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP)
> Dirty or sticking injectors
> Malfunctioning or improperly programmed Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

I Have a 1171 code on a 1999 xc70 volvo and the engine runs real bad no power thanks

The control module receives information from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) about the fuel/air mixture when idling at both the lower and upper part-load range - If the fuel/air mixture deviates from [lambda]=1 the short-term fuel trim will compensate for this by adjusting injection time so that [lambda]=1 is achieved. When the short-term fuel trim makes an adjustment, the integrator median must be adjusted by the long-term trim. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-261A will be stored when the long-term trim must be adjusted to maximum in the lower part of the load area.

I have a scion tc 05 with this code p171 . what does it mean?

DTC P0171 is set when fuel trim is driven rich beyond a certain value. Possible causes are:
1. Exhaust system leak.
2. Improper fuel pressure.
3. Fuel injector restricted.
4. Defective heated oxygen sensor No. 1.
5. Defective Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
6. Defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
When the air fuel ratio feedback is stable after the engine is at operating temperature and the fuel trim has reached its limit of correction to the rich side. (2 trip logic).
Feedback from the HO 2 sensor influences short-term fuel trim and short-term fuel trim influences long trim fuel trim. Short-term values are temporary and not stored when the ignition key is turned off. Long-term values are stored in memory because they are part of the basic injection duration. Long term values affect injection duration in closed and open loop because they are used to calculate basic injection duration. It is important to remember that the actual fuel trim will be the opposite of the DTC. A system too lean, DTC P0171 will mean the ECM is making a + or rich correction.
read (and let me know)above data and Freeze Frame by using (example, generic) Scan Tool on # mode 2, etc.
Slowly accelerate the engine in the increments shown and record voltage,
grams/sec of MAF and SFT, LFT, Injection Pulse, Fuel Pressure, etc.

Speedometer sudenly stoppped working. now works intermittently. also shows check engine light. It is showing p0171 & p0172 codes. Lean and rich. seams like they contradict each other. occasionaly the...

P0171 indicates a lean condition. The most common cause of this is a defective mass air flow sensor. Also check if any vacuum leaks.Replace MAf sensor,if cleaning the MAF does not help.
OBD II P0172 Fuel System Too Rich (Bank 1).P0172 - System Too Rich (Bank 1) Essentially this DTC means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a rich condition.
When the code says that the Fuel System is "too rich," it means that the computer has been subtracting more and more fuel, which is called Long Term Fuel Trim. Ideally, the Long Term Fuel Trim should be close to 1 to 2 percent. When a code P0172 is set, it means that the Fuel Trim is anywhere from -15 percent to as low as -30 percent compensated. When this happens, the computer knows that there is an improper condition in the control of the Fuel System.

Thanks.

P0171 just change the mass air flow light came on

Hi,

Volvo's code - P0171 means: Long-term fuel trim, part load. Long-term fuel trim, idling.

You will need to refer to a workshop manual, to ascertain the correct inspection procedure.

Cheers,
