Question about Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

Stalling, powerloss, Overdrive on/off

About a week ago i went through a tunnel car wash and have had problems since. I have a 97 dakota sport, 6cyl, automatic. The Overdrive will turn off by itself when i shift into gear sometimes. The truck seems to run ok when cold, but then will have power loss, stalling, and occasionaly backfires at power loss when i hit the gas. Ive replaced the wires, distr cap, rotor, plugs all look fine. Air intake and such all looks fine and ive checked all the ground connections as well. Dry gas, fuel systel cleaners didnt work either. Any help, im screwed without a vehicle.

Which transmissions interchange with the 97 Dakota 3.9 automatics ?

Your transmission is the 42RE, formerly A500SE, and A904 way before that. Due to the electronics involved, you would need the computer and associated harness for a manual Dakota if you were thinking about using a non-electronic automatic.

Stalling and overdrive

IAC ( idle air control ) location. You need to be sure to clean pintle (pointed end) of motor as well as spray clean inside port where it comes out of. Careful not to lose small "o" ring on motor.

Dodge Dakota overdrive and ABS/brake problem

The problem could be in your differential. If the ABS traction ring has any defects in the teeth, the rear wheel speed sensor will stop registering and disable your ABS.
This may not resolve your transmission concern, but it may answer your ABS/Brake light problem.
