Is the Theft light on the dash flashing when you attempt to start? This is the first year ford started using the PATS system with the computer chip in the key. If the theft laght flashes when attempting to start, the system thinks in has a bad key and will shut the vehicle down.

Starter will not engage. full power to everything, lights, windows gauges, etc. No crank no nothing. acts like dead battery but everything else works.

Could b a weak battery. Make shure it has at least 12 volts. Change of temperature will make them act up. Cold cranking amps could not b up to par. Try jumping it with a known good one. If that dosent work check connections at bat, starter& especially the ground. Take negative cable off where it goes (bracket,motor,) &sand area clean, apply dialectric grease. A star washer under cable will help greatly. Try start again. Much luck 2 u.

I have a 1976 jeep j10. I have replaced the starter, starter solenoid, ignition module, both battery cables(positive,negative), cable from starter to starter solenoid, coil, cap and rotar. it will click...

Could be: a) starter cannot turn the motor flywheel (motor frozen or jammed)
or b) the battery is weak (not enough power to crank the motor)

Turn the dome light on and see if it is bright, see if light diminishes completely when engaging starter (high current drawn by starter).

Try to turn engine by pulling the alternator belt with transmission in neutral to see if motor is jammed. Or engage in a high gear and push the car and see if motor turns.

If motor is not frozen, jump and boost the battery if you suspect weak battery and see if you have the same problem.

Wont start with key

Do you have a bad starter? also check for loose or dirty battery cables on both ends of cables as the starter does take a lot of pull and a dirty or loose cable won't give it the power to start but will let the lights work.

Starter motor

the battery is weak ,discharged or bad, change it.
try jumper cable starts.
if that works try a charged battery now. or clean the terminals first.
if jumper cable start fails , then hot wire the starter.
using a jumper wire. (see key line link below)
if that fails the starter is bad.
if that works the key line is dead.
is caR A/T or m/t tranny?
we cant guess that. so.....
if M/T the clutch switch is bad.
if A/T the PRNLD switch is bad, try cranking in NEUTRAL ?
if input to both switches is dead, then igntion start switch is bad.

the method works on all cars , older that about 2007.
newer cars have autostart , remote start and other complex bs.

Try this,turn key switch on and crank motor for 1 second then let the key come back but do not turn key off leave it on for 10 minutes then repeat this 2 more times this should reset the security key learn.If does'nt then you will have to replace the ignition lock cylinder.

Can the pcm cause the starter not to turn in my 2000 dodge neon?

Is it getting fuel? Check the pressure regulator or the fuel pump. Even if you have the plug wires on wrong it should do something.

When i turn the key the engine wont turn over but i have power to everything but the motor

is the car a manual transmission or an automatic? if manual there is a switch on the clutch pedal that wont let engine turn over unless clutch is pushed to floor.automatic it is mounted on transmission at the linkage.for auto trans you can move shifter back an forth while trying to crank engine. if manual you can push clutch pedal to floor hard an try to crank.

Car will not turn over

Hi,

If I understand you right, the problem is the engine will not crank, that is turn over when you turn they ignition key to START. Having said that, might it be that the issue is with the starter system. The starter system is initiated at the ignition switch when the key is turned to start. At this point, the ignition switch then provides +12VDC to a starter relay (if the vehicle has got one) or direct to the starting solenoid. The relay is but a remote switch with slightly higher amperage capacity. The starter relay then engages and supplies +12VDC to the staring solenoid. The starting solenoid then performs two (2) functions. It provides the switching action (hundreds amps) from the battery heavy cable to the actual starter motor. The solenoid likewise pushes a small pinion gear along the shaft of the starter motor to engage the ring gear. The ring gear is of course on the edge of the flywheel which in turn is attached to the crankshaft.

Starter system problems could be corrected by:
1. check battery, battery cables and connections;
2. charge the battery if required;
3. clean brushes and guides of brush holders of the starter motor;
4. clean the commutator and commutator segments;
5. check/replace the armature or field coils if determined to be defective;
6. in some extreme cases it could be the drive pinion or the flywheel gear ring is defective.
7. often it is the big switch that the solenoid activates that looses contacts causing no +12V internally to the motor.
8. Most likely would be a defective starter relay or the IGN switch itself. Relative to this, you might try and check the connectors/terminals and electrical joints.

In the picture below, the upper portion is the starter solenoid while the one below it is the actual starter.

Given the amount of work to overhaul a starter, you might consider just replacing it.

So recommended course of action is determine if there is +12VDC at the starter solenoid when IGN switch is turned to START.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
