Hi folks, I have a 1997 hyundai coupe,when the car is just ticking over the engine revs itself,anyone know if this is the intake manifold gasket ? if it is,is it a common problem with that make and year ? and ,how do I get at it ? there's not much room there.Maybe take the throttle body etc. etc. off ?

This was a common issue with these engines. Unfortunately there is no easy way to fix this problem other than to remove the intake manifold and replace this plastic tube along with the intake manifold gasket itself, these engines were common for the intake manifold gaskets leaking and also for that tube to crack over time and start to leak as well.
Like i stated, unfortunately there is no real "easy" fix for your problem. I have replaced many of these tubes and many intake manifold gaskets on these engines. I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you are familiar with these engine, there are special torque specifications for all the bolts. I do know that the intake manifold repair job usually runs somewhere in the ballpark of $800 - $1000 or more depending on where you take it.
White smoke usually indicates a blown manifold gasket or head gasket. First, check for coolant in oil. When you pull the dipstick, is the level too high or have a foamy appearance? If so, blown head gasket. If not, spray starting fluid around intake manifold outer mating surface with engine running. ( not near throttle body or air intake) If motor revs up during procedure, locate that area you are spraying and duplicate the motor rev up. If consistent, blown intake manifold gasket. Its always good to have codes checked first if you have a check engine light illuminated....Mike
usually caused by a leak in intake manifold gaskets. Try spraying ether or carb cleaner at the gaskets with the engine running. If the engine revs at all, you have a gasket leak. Let me know if you need instructions for replacing the gaskets. If it isn't the gaskets, check vacuum hoses attached to the intake manifold. these can also leak more when cold.
engine running lean. Usually caused by vacuum leak. If you have a V engine, the failure is usually intake manifold gaskets. If you have inline (4-cylinder), the cause may be intake gaskets or bad or unhooked vacuum hoses attached to the intake manifold. Check all vacuum hoses for cracks or loose connections. Replace any suspect hose. To find manifold gasket leaks, spray ether or carb cleaner on the gaskets with the engine running. If the engine revs at all, you have a leaky gasket and must remove the manifold to replace. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
It's possible he has two plug wires crossed, or pulled a spak plug wire apart replace #2 spark plug wire First. To test check the firing order and make sure all the wires on the right plugs and the correct place on the distributor, if it is right, then buy a can of carburator cleaner and spray around the intake gasket if the engine revs up when you spray the carb cleaner around the intake manifold with (engine running) if the engine rpm revs up you have an intake leak.
Here are a few things to check check idle speed control , TPS- throttle position sensor and also very important check for vacuum leak on intake any broken hoses or intake itself gasket leaking Very possible for this problem. A simple test is when engine is running up and down use an intake cleaner (in compressed can) and spray around intake manifold if there is a vacuum leak the engine will surge up .
