Failed communication with TCM

I have a 1996 chevy impala lt and for some reason it is losing communication with transmission control module of and on even as I am driving down the road . What should I do?

First I would check all of the connection plugs also i would get so connnection (continuity)grease and CAREFULLY put it in the connector juet enough to make a better connection. It sounds like you might have a loose or broken wire. but the jacket is not broken. you may have to take it to the dealer and get a replacement harness just the one for the control module.

If you have a SS, take it to a transmission shop with a Tech 2 scanner. They can scan the ECM for proper DTC codes to make sure it's not the TCM and only a wire harness. If you like try checking all the wire harness from the transmission, look for loose connections and broken/crushed harness clips ect. Try this for now to clear all the DTC codes so there are no old codes in the history. Turn the ignition keys to the run position and pull the fuse to the ECM (BATT1) for 30 seconds. After placing the fuse back in start the car, it may stall but let it and don't touch anything. Just start it up again and go for a test drive after idling for 1 min. Then ECM needs to relearn all the sensors in the drive train. Any codes pulled will be new and recent to your transmission issues. Good luck and hope this helps.

For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself.

Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory.
This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM's memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. Trouble code p 1698 no message from tcm


The 1698 code means either that there is no digital data communication from the the transmission controller OR from the body controller that is being received at the powertrain control module. An analyzer that read "hex" codes would distinguish which, the former being a 60 the latter a 61 hex code. Without a sophisticated diagnostic box about the only thing an amateur can do is shake the harnesses at those three controllers to see if you can induce an interruption that causes the light to come on in the case where it was a simple electrical wire discontinuity as the cause. With a diagnotic box the actual electrical characteristics of what is going on as shown on the data bus wires can be performed that might reveal which component is failing and why if it is not a wire problem.
I can give you the pin numbers at all three of those modules so that you could do a continuity check/harness shake test if you have an ohmmeter or continuity checker and would like to get into it. Otherwise trying to get a good referral to a tune-up mechanic who is familiar with the Chrysler system and has the test tools is the only alternative that will get the answer with the minimum of costs. It is not something that you want to try solving by throwing parts at it.
