Question about 1997 Nissan Pickup

1997 Nissan XE Pick-up A/C Issues

The A/C compressor on my 1997 Nissan Pick-up continuously cycles on and off causing the air to to blow from cool and warm repeated. The problem seems to occur more frequently with the recent elevated temperatures in Atlanta. My local repair shop has indicated that the freon level is good, there are not any freon leaks that can be detected, compressor is functioning as it should, etc. In summary, my local shop is not able to diagnose to issue and hoping someone may be able to lead me in the right direction.

Thanks

Hi, the reason for this is the location of the evaporator core, its on the passenger side, a low charge will cause the side nearest to core it to cool more. Your cycling of compressor concures with this scenario. Recharge system to specifications.

Heater blowing out cold air? A/C not getting as cold?

The heater and A/C have one thing in common, the blower motor. The heater is controlled by a vacuum system. The heater control is on the right (passanger) side under the hood. The heater control opens a water valve by vacuum. If the blower motor is blowing air and the heater is not working, this could be the cause. Note that the cooling system must be full of coolant for this system to work.

The A/C system is controlled during the defrost cycle and the A/C cycle. It sounds that you may have an air circulation problem if both the heater and A/C is not working properly. Again, if the vents are blowing out good air flow, there are other problems. If there is a freon problem, the A/C compressor will cycle on and off quickly and there will not be much cool air.

Hope this helps and please post more information about your problem for us to help.

Air conditioner

The squeeling is the belt because the air compresor is likely seizing. At idle it can't turn the compressor, in motionthe compressor probably turns and cools the air. Most air conditioners come on when the defroster is on.

My 2002 Expedition air conditioner will sometimes blow hot air and others cold air

I would check the following possibilities:
1. Is compressor clutch working? - You need to do this when the ac is blowing hot air only - locate compressor drive pulley on engine - rubber belt wraps around it. Start engine and set to max ac. When the ac is blowing hot air, look at the center of the compressor drive pulley using a good flash light - watch it for a while, it should be spinning with the pulley - this means the compressor is engaged. If not, the compressor is not engaged. If your ac is blowing hot air, then the compressor should be engaged and running (trying to cool). If it is not engaged, then your compressor clutch is probably going out. Could be low voltage to clutch, but more likely the clutch is worn out and only working some of the time. Note: if working normally, the compressor clutch will engage and disengage in cycles- but the air should always be cold. If clutch is bad, compressor would need to be replaced (sold as one unit). This is tricky to diagnose and could take some time - you need to do it when ac is blowing hot air but set to max cooling.

2. Low on refrigerant or refrigerant has moisture in it? If your ac blows cold initially after being off for a while, then heats up, and continues to regularly cycle back and forth between hot and cool air, then the system may be low on refrigerant or the refrigerant may have moisture in it that is freezing and restricting refrigerant flow. An a/c shop can check refrigerant level and even replace refrigerant if moisture is suspected.

Could be other issues, but I would start with these.

Good luck

Air conditioner blows hot air inadvertantly.

possibl ac compressor clutch problem, cooling fan at rad not working so ac goes into high press mode and turns off(so it doesn,t blow system apart, built in safety)not enough r134 in system(low charge)
