2000 honda civic bogs down, back fires, and dies when rpms get over 3k. then it wont start after it dies till it sits. clogged my catalytic converter through a code sayin insufficient air flow to the cat. idles fine.
After 14 years I think it would be reasonable to have bad catalytic converter. Is there some reason your not accepting this?
I have to agree with Dan. Keep driving it and they will get so clogged up, it wont start at all
Hi Murphy ,
Hi Murphy ,
Hi Murphy, I just read your problem, and my mechanical advise is to look for a new Catalyst. The problem you do face on reving up your engine to 3000rpm that is the reason which is cutting off as there is a lot of pressure coming out of the exhaust system and due to the catalyst is not well open diod force the emission to return back to engine causing the engine to cut off as there is not any other way. Also has a risk either the catalyst to get overheated ready to get in flames and cause fire to your vehicle,or a risk to blow the engine.

Is there any white smoke coming out the exhaust? Sounds like the same problem my friend had when he warped his head on his 91 civic. Any overheating at all? Otherwise another guess would be maybe a bad catalitic converter that clogged up. Hope this helps any, good luck

the idle air control valve should be checked for operation both mechanically and electrically, it could be defective. cost depends on which trans you have auto around $230.00 for the part, manual around $150.00 for the part. at those prices I would be darn sure it has a problem before replacement, or find one from a salvage yard in better shape.

With regard to the Transmission, some Honda's have strict procedures to follow with their trany's.
I hope you never had it flushed by a Quick lube or something like that. Also the type of fluid is very special in some of them too so mixing them with regular ATF will cause problems. I worked for a Forein Car Specialist and know how important it is to use only the Honda recommended fluids in them. If the light went out you can reset the code and see if it returns, if it does you may want a reputable shop to professionaly flush your tranny and replace the oil with Honda recommended oil.
With regards to your Catalytic converter, unless you can hear it comming apart inside (bang on it and listen if it rattles) or if the car is running extremly rich (gas will ruin the cat) you may have a blocked or ruined muffler farther down the system which is slowing the flow through the cat.
I hope this helps.
Regards
Sam

Time for the dealer to take a look. You need special skill and special tools to diagnose this not to mention years of experience with electronic engine control systems.
