It's in the alternator. Not user serviceable. Replace the alternator. Make sure the battery is good too.

Why is alt not putting out voltage


Often they just wear out or the internal regulator goes out. Most auto parts stores with test them, or you charging system, for you , for free.

I have a 1991 chevy s10 that i had to replace the ignition control module, was wondering if a bad voltage regulator might have caused the ICM to fail!!!!


I also have a 91 S-10 and have recently had to replace my ICM i really think that it's due to high mileage and just wore out more than anything else

Ignition coils wearing out quickly


I will try to answer because your listing is showing as a Ford product and you may not get another mechanic for your brand with a wrong category.

You need to measure the voltage in the system. You can get a free charging system check at most big autoparts places like Autozone,etc.

Now too much voltage will kill a coil. You also need to see if the original wiring has been changed or patched. The makers often put in resistor wiring in the coil circuit to reduce voltage. Any changes will allow different voltages to reach the coil.

Heat is also a factor. An experienced Mopar mechanic will have seen common problems and heat failure can be one of them.

You need to find out the operating voltage limits or Manufacturers specs.

The charging system check will show if the Voltage regulator in your Alternator is set too high.

I have a 1991 dodge Dakota v8 318 autotrans. The voltage regulator isn't working. Would it be better/easier to put in a regulator or replace the ECM? And is there any other make/model that work be...


just bgo to the scrapper and get a similar alternator so long as the fittings are the same then it will work even if the amperage output is a bit higher or lower ,Often you can remove the built in regulator /brush unit and renew a brush but sometimes the commutator is worn out still it will not hurt to take it off and have a play to see if it will take a new carbon brush as normally only one out of the two wear out

How does an alternator go bad?


Moving parts. Its basically like an electric motor. There are bushes that wear down. Lots of heat and electronic voltage regulator inside.

New alternator new battery installed still wont charge the battery and radio and power anttena dont work


If you have a voltage meter, you should check if your voltage regulator is working correctly. The voltage regulator should keep the voltage to the battery something under 15 volts when the motor is running (more than 13.5 volts with all electrical turned off).

If more than 14.5 volts, you may be damaging your new battery and regulator is not working properly. Also, radio may not come on because a voltage sensor is protecting it from the high voltage. Antenna is controlled by radio so that should not be working either.

How to tell if the battery or the altenator is bad


Test the car battery & the alternator supply voltage. If the alternator voltage is around 14 Volts, engine idling and headlamps low beam turned ON, then the battery is bad. After engine stopping, the battery voltage should be at least 12,4 Volts. The battery could be too old and needs to be replaced. If the alternator voltage is below 13,8 Volts then you must check up first time the alternator belt & tensioner pulley. If everything is OK, then the alternator is out of order and needs to be repaired in a dedicated workshop: weared brushes, bad voltage regulator, ...

Batteries wear out with use. Regularly checking the electrolyte level can extend their useful life.

Gas gauge indicate empty when full


check the fuses and relay......these are the most common problems


1. Defective Dash Voltage regulator (Voltage limiter) or gauge
"make sure the gauge is actually receiving current"
2. Lost of a ground at the sending unit
"make sure it is grounded"
3. Break in the wire going to the dash
"chek it"
4. On some Chryslers, the Bulkhead connector on the firewall or connector behind kick panel.
Less Common
1. Actual bad Sending Unit
"it could be the filter"
2. Fuel Gauge defective
"in some causes, nothing is perfect, or premature wear or just ussual wear"
