Question about 1999 Saturn SL

3 Answers

I have a 1999 Saturn SL 5 speed manual transmission. When I press on the clutch is squeaks. In the past I put some grease on the shaft above the clutch petal, it worked - now it doesn't. It also seems to be worse in the summer. Could I need a clutch master cylinder? Everything work just fine - it just makes a lot of noise

The cluch squeaks when I depress and when I let off the clutch. If I touch the master cylinder while someone depressed the clutch it "feels" of "sound"s like dry squeak it is coming from the cylinder. The clutch is working just fine - just a noise that drives me nuts. The cylinder is full of dot3 oil and nothing is leaking. Thanks solution #1 & #2 Any other ideas

Could it be more like a chatter? Or is it coming from the pedal. I would imediately advise you that your release, "throw out" bearing is squeaking/chattering with the clutch depressed, however one thing you wrote would be contradictory to this theory, you said that you put grease on the shaft above the clutch pedal and it eliminated the problem for a while. Your master/slave cylinder, the way you describe, is not the issue. Other than the squeak, is the clutch functioning properly?

I have a 1999 Saturn SL - 1, and wish to find an auto transmission. What are the date ranges that will provide me with compatible transmission?

The 1996 - 1999 saturn tranys should be the same as long as they have the same speeds, when you are looking for a trany like lets say a used one the junk yards will tell you which are interchangeable, now most junk yards offer a warranty with there tranys even an extended warranty, hope this is helpful,

Major trouble getting the 5 speed to shift into gear. I have to shut the car off put in gear and then start it in gear with the clutch depressed. Is this a clutch problem, linkage or gear oil deficit in the...

Good Evening, mostly your transmission is good. I would be questioning the the condition of your clutch disc, but first I would have to say clutch master and or slave cylinder. I have had a few run across the lot where the clutch master cylinder has leaked internally just up above your clutch pedal where the rod goes through the firewall. let me know what you find, and when was any clutch work done.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

you have a bad head gasket or a cracked head better off to replace engine with a lower mileage motor its better to do and maybe cheaper.the reason i say this is because when you rebuild the top end the lower end becomes the next victim when put up against a newly rebuilt top end.

95 saturn sl 2 5 speed manual transmission, clutch pedal is fine. shifter wont go into gear

This vehicle has a pair of shift cables which attatches to the shifter and runs to the transmission shift housing. To diagnose, removal of the center console is in order so you can inspect and verify the shifter/cable connections and movement, then verify the cables move the linkages properly at the transmission . These cables are a fairly common failed part and sold as the set, these are a dealer item and no aftermarket cables are available .
