An '87 Olds Toronado has three computers: the ECM (engine control module), the BCM (body control module), and the IPC ( instrument panel cluster). The A/C compressor is controlled by the body control module.

Diagram for a/c control board 99 tahoe compressor not engaging

Is the system full of refrigerant ? Low pressure cut out switch could keep the compressor from engaging > The PCM/ECM -engine computer controls the engagement of the compressor clutch. Rather then jumping the relay, test for power an control . If you pull the relay out of the fuse box an look on the bottom of the relay , you will see 4 sets on numbers 30 & 87 - 85 & 86 . you proved 30 has battery voltage by jumping it to 87 , now you need to check the control side of the relay . Pin 86 should have battery voltage while pin 85 supplies a ground through the PCM/ECM .

When i bolt the ground wire to engine behind alt, the ac compressor clutch locks on and stays on with key on or off. any suggestions???

The only thing it could be is the conrtol wire of the A/C compressor clutch relay is shorted to one of the wires grounding at the alternator . The PCM - engine computer controls the grounding for the A/C compressor clutch relay. Find the A/C compressor clutch relay in the under hood fuse box , pull the relay out of the fuse box an look on the bottom . You will see four sets of numbers . 30 & 87 plus 85 & 86 . Take an ohm meter an check pin 85 to ground with the ground wire's behide the alternator connected , you will have continuity . Disconnect the ground behind the alternator an you will probably have a open circuit . When the motor was changed wire's were pinched or something . Most likely . Here , check out the wiring diagram http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html Enter vehicle info. year , make , model an engine size . Under system click on HVAC , then under subsystem click on HVAC controls . Click the search button ,then the blue link . Fourth diagram down is for the A/C compressor clutch relay circuit. Don't know if know how a computer controlled relay circuit work's . Looking at the diagram .The DB/OR - dark blue with orange trace wire would have to be shorted to one of those ground wire's for the compressor clutch to stay engaged .

AC blows hot air and compressor does not turn on. Can the AC relay switch be tested or bypassed to see if the compressor turns on?

yes, if you can figure out which terminal is what, you will be able to jump. Be carefull dont send 12v up the wrong wire or you will fry computer. I would pull relay out and jump at the compressor pigtail, its much safer, and the car dosn't need to be running, all your checking anyways is that the clutch is working which should give a click sound every time you tag 12volts.

I have an '87 Olds Toronado and my problem is the battery goes dead over night while parked and shut off. I have had the GENERATOR light come on and also ELECTRICAL light come on. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the battery is not holding a full charge...or not being fully charged by the alternator...(may be a corroded connection) Both of these are free tests at your local parts store...if both test fine...(unlikely) the starter has to be shorting out to drain the battery overnight...Hope this helps.

Im trying to fix the air struts on a 1990 toronado i got the old one off tryin to get the new one in do you have to take the rotor and brakes off to do it

well... how did you get the old ones off??? most likely you might have to take the rotors off if you cant get to the bolt, but 9 times out of 10 you dont, you can unbolt it from the top of the strut, make sure you have a strut compressor, unbolt sway bar if equipted, and it should just fold down. unbolt strut from the bottom and remove, to install just reverse the order

The ac in my '87 Acura Legend sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The fan also runs on occasion and not necessarily when the ac is supposed to come on. The system has Climate Control. I've checked and...

Mine wasn't a LS but the freon too low to have the compressor clutch switch on. The R12 cans are expensive if you can find them. On one 87 I changed over to R134 because it was completely empty. The 2nd fan at the radiator should go on when the ac is running, even if the main fan is not.

My electronic dash and climite control on my 1988 toronado turn on and off

According to the 1988 shop manual, the IPC instrument panel cluster - and the overhead map lights
receive power from the computer modules which seem to be located behind the glove box, I plan to
remove the cardboard from the glove box and check for loose connectors. If this fails, I will contact a
self employed mechanic who used to work for an Olds dealer. He is both competent and honest.
