Question about 1997 Volvo 850

1 Answer

2002 volvo S80. Car was making a wailing sound and was sucking air in through oil filler cap and dip stick so hard it was tough to get the cap off. After checking on line replaced the PCV box / oil seprator /flame retarder with OEM replacement Volvo part. Essentially to no avail. Only happens after the car is warm and the idle of the car fluctuates betwen 800 and 2000 rpm. Any suggestions

How do i check if the pcv valve of my volvo v50 2008 model wagon needs replacement? where is it located in the engine?

There's a relatively easy test. Use a rubber glove and hold it over teh oil filler while the engine is idling. If it inflates the glove, you need to replace the PCV kit.
Also, do the same over the dip stick tube. If it inflates...

It should gently suck the glove in, showing slight vacuum.

As for replacing it - wheee! That's a fun one. You basically remove the fan, the air tube (if it's a turbo) and then the intake manifold. Then you replace the oil separator, use a zip tie to poke around the drain from the oil separator to ensure that's open. The banjo bolts are the hard parts to get to, but otherwise it's more tedious than difficult.

There's a kit from FCP that is about $350 or so, and contains all the parts. I ended up using regular screw-type clamps instead of the Oetiker 'squeeze' clamps Volvo used on the hose connections.

Where is the oil dip stick located on 2002 cavalier 4 cyl

If you can't see separate oil dipstick (usually has an yellow plastic handle), then your oil level dipstick is connected to oil filler cap. When you unscrew the oil cap you'll be able to see the dipstick and level meter.

Where is the pcv valve located on a 1998 c70

There isnt' one. Volvos are equipped with vent-box located underneath the intake manifold. Remove the oil dip stick tube and then the intake manifold and remove the box. Install a new breather box and make sure to clean the lines going to and from the box. If the breather box gets clogged, oil will push from the oil filler cap, dip stick tube and worst case, blow through the engine seals.

Engine makes whistle sound. If you remove oil fill cap the sound goes away.

There are a couple of things you might want to take a look at.Check to make sure that your oil cap has a tight seal.Ceck the rubber seal to make sure its not damaged so that it makes a tight seal.If it still has a whistling sound then check for a vacuum leak somewhere in you vacuum hoses for the emissions system.

How do u check the oil

You have an oil stick that goes into the oil pan. In order to properly check the oil level, you must let your car heat up for 7-10 minutes, until temperature is almost normal. Make sure the car is level. After that checks out, take the dip stick out of the engine. On the end of the dip stick, you will see a warm mark and a cold mark. There is two dents or marks on the edge of the dip stick. The oil level needs to be between those marks. If it is below, add oil. Be careful to not add to much. They might be just two marks on it only. Same rule. It needs to be in the middle. If you have a question, feel free to contact me. I am here to help you. Thank you for choosing FixYa.

2006 volvo s40 50,000 mi. noticed a noise under hood that sounded like a belt slipping. sounded more like it was coming from the back of the motor. With the car running,I took the oil dip stick out and the...

The oil filter housing also houses the pcv system. What causes the noise is that there is a check valve in the pcv system that is supposed to regulate the pressure in the crankcase. The valve gets stuck and causes vacuum to build in the crankcase, which in turn sucks air wherever it can causing the noise, which is also why when you pull the dipstick it stops. This can also cause a check engine light with codes for fuel trim. The oil filter housing will need to be replaced. Good news is that Volvo extended the warranty on these to 100K miles so it should be free of charge at the dealer. One thing to watch for is oil leaks after the replacement from the camshaft seals. If air can get past a seal, usually oil can too. If the seals leak too long it can contaminate the timing belt and cause it to break, which causes a lot of damage.
