I'd have to check voltage and ground for the instrument cluster. I noticed one of the fuses for your instrument cluster goes hot with the key on, same thing for ac compressor. I'd have to voltage feed to and from ignition switch for applicable fuse. Check the ignition switch wiring connector. I can't rule out ignition switch itself, at the moment.
There could be other issues?
Ignition switch faults are common on some makes and models.
Instrument cluster wiring connector problems. Sometimes if you disconnect and reconnect the instrument cluster connector, it may start working again, also, cycling the instrument cluster connector may reset, if it starts working, well, it's working for now, may quit again.
Some instrument clusters may do a self test, don't know about yours?
Press and hold odometer reset button, turn key to run position release odometer reset button, watch the odometer. Your indicator lamps may turn on and off, the gages may cycle in small increments. The cluster will exit self test on its own.
You may have to check buss circuits.
Does it make a chirping sound when its working, and or jumps up and down, those speedometers have a cable that connects to the trans and the back of the unit, most likely it is the instrument cluster, the gears in the speedo unit are plastic and sometimes snap off teeth so they work and stop, my 90 civic used to makes a squeeling sound then one day just stopped working I replaced the whole cluster from a wrecking yard, works fine again. Good luck, you could also check to see if the cable has come loose from the back of the instrument cluster.
check speed sensor signal at sensor and at cluster. Jack up drive wheels, Block other wheels, start car, put in drive. Then check both AC signals. The signal at the cluster is on pins 14 and 16. See diagrams below.
Practically you can check on the harness and connectors to the instrument cluster for loose connectivity. remove the dashboard carefully and cehcck for dry solder or loose connections, use a lens to check for pcb line break or cracks.
hello capecodwizar, sounds like the cluster is crazy. Your cluster is actually 3 seperate pieces assembled together. It has an SI board, motherboard, and the gauges. Most of the time, the mother board fails. It is similar to the mother board in your computer. The cluster can be ordered from the dealer, but they are kind of expensive. I do know that some speedometer repair centers and other business can repair your cluster. If you try to repair the cluster yourself, make sure you use a static mat when handling the cluster, since the components carry resistors/capacitors. Before replacing the cluster, try removing it and pay attention to the connectors on the back, sometimes the connectors come loose, especially if the cluster has been removed before.
