I have a 1997 chevy cavalier with a 2.2 liter 4 cyl. starter wont disengage tried to new starters and relay and its still does it. It worked fine before i had to replace the starter.

disconnect the s terminal on the starter and connect the battery, if the starter engages then its the starter, if it doesnt check the voltage on the small wire it should be dead unless the key is in the start pos

Starter wont turn engine over 1986 firebird

Might be a bad starter cable, fallow the cable from the battery to the starter.make sure both ends are tight, then check the ground cable. If all is tight turn on your headlights and see if they are nice and bright.no lights or they look dim and go out when you try to turn it over, could be the battery or cables. make sure there's 12 volts at the battery.then make sure there's 12 at the starter(battery cable post).no voltage at the starter but good at the battery replace the cable.good voltage at the starter, use a screw driver and connect the small post w/purple wire to the big battery cable by bridging the two posts. Warning!!!!!This will probably turn over the engine,Keep everything clear,hands-clothes-tools.engine turns over, bad ignition switch mounted on the side of the steering collumn.this is an electric switch not the key switch.

My 98 Chevy Cavalier will not 'crank/turnover' when the key is turned - it is silent. The headlights/interior stuff all lights up and works fine but the car makes no noise when i turn the ignition

If the lights dim, its the starter, If they go out, you have a bAD BATTERY CONNECTION. This cranking with lights on . It may be neutral safety swith, May be clutch safety if manual trans. I'd go for the battery connection is poor. Ck the ground/neg first.

Car wont turn over

Sounds like you have a bad starter. To check this you can try taking a hammer to the starter and tap it while someone in the car turns the key. If it starts you know you have a bad starter and need to replace it. Hope this helps you out

Wires to 1996 chevy cav starter

Most chevy cars have 3 wires. I main wire that comes from the battery. Another a little smaller wire that goes to the same post in the center of the starter solinoid. And 1 small wire that goes to the smaller threaded post on the side.
