Question about 1997 Ford Escort

1 Answer

Ford Escort 1.6 1997 Engine runs smoothly but then starts cutting out after a varying period.Replaced air filter, which was dirty, and there was a temporary improvement. The fault returned a few days later. Suspected that the auto choke was faulty, or maybe plug insulation is breaking down. If the accelerator is touched when starting from cold the engine starts cutting out almost immediately.

Have you attempted to clean throttle plate? I would suggest taking hose off of throttle plate.Hold it wide open and spray throttle body cleaner, (with it not running) let it dry if it is really black or gooey spray and wipe goo and fluid off with a rag.put back together. It may not be problem but if air filter was dirty throttle plate most likely is.

2002 ford escort zx2 replaced fuel filter, air filter, plugs, and MAS...why won't it stay running?

it could be down to your spark plug leads take the leads out one by one and get somebody to hold the lead to the engine [to earth it] NOT WITH YOUR HAND with something thats not conductive like something plastic then try starting the engine to see if a spark jumps from the lead and repeat this please dont do this with your hand its very dangerous enouf voltage to knock you out!

99 escort SOHC engine. Idles rough at start up. Smooths out some when it warms up but still idles erratically and surges. Changed the plugs and put new air filter in, but no change. Plugs are fairly black...

If you can find the IAC valve(idle air control) on the throttle body-it should be replaced or try to clean..If you put in new plugs and they turn soot black in a short time period, you have other issues-possible internal engine, such as valve train problems, or a partial exhaust blockage, or the fuel your buying is not good...

Revs up and down at low revs

you need to clean or replace your idle air control valve(IAC). The IAC allows your engine to idle smoothly by opening and closing a valve that allows air flow to the engine that is monitored by the computer. The IAC get dirty causing it to stick and move slower than it should which causes the up and down idle

Engine starts for a second, but wont stay running. It is a Ford Escort Wagon 1.9L

First thing I would do is check your air filter. You can pull the air filter out and try starting vehicle. Check to make sure there are no obstructions between the air filter housing and the intake. If that dont work, on your next posting mention the year of the vehicle and if its fuel injected or carburated. Good Luck

Does a 1998 v6 accord need a tune-up? I can't find the manual or a maintenance schedule online. I don't want to call the dealer 'cuz they just want your money. My car has 140k miles and runs pretty...

All engines need periodic tuneup. At the least is spark plugs, fuel and air filters, and O2 sensor(s). Any timing belt driven overhead cam engine should have the timing belt replaced every 50 to 60K miles. If it fails while running, nasty things happen to valves and pistons--this problem varies by manufacturer and engine design. You should change the oil filter along with every oil change.

A code P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where theMaf Sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
  • There could be a downstream vacuum leak of the MAF sensor. or a leaking intake manifold gasket or loose vacuum hose on the engine.
Possible solutions include:
  • In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
  • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
  • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure

Engine Dies in Idel

being a certified mechanic has its advantages. there are multiple causes for that problem: lack of air or lack of fuel.
make sure the air filter is mostly clean.
check throttle plate (where air filter tube goes into motor), most likely black with soot and carbon. clean with tooth brush and gas, wipe off with clean rag. repeat ultil CLEAN.
low air flow past plate when closed (idle) will cause stall condition.
dirty throttle body is a common problem with lots of cars. causes engine stall.

dirty fuel filter will also cause this problem.. low fuel pressure at idle.

I also believe that your car is equipped with an idle air control valve. (regulates a bypassed air flow to motor at idle) this valve may be stopped up or non-functional. have local shop take a look, but there are ways to check valve if you consider yourself mechanically inclined
