The check engine light came on in the caar. took the car to get it scanned at an auto parts store and the scanner showed two possible problems. 1 Failed canister purge solenoid and 2 failed fuel tank pressure sensor. I am unsure how to diagnois the problem further and do not want to just start replacing parts because the computer said that I should. Thanks for any help that you can give me

Re: check engine light on
The computer never tells you what to replce jsut the symptoms and whats malfunctioning, what is happening is it can't pressureize the fuel tank and canister purge valve, so i could be as simple as a bad gasket on the fuel tank or a dirty canister check valve or a broken hose on the purge canister so check these things first.

The first thing I usually do when seeing a malfunction indicator light on, is to have it scanned with an OBD-II scanner available from Sears, Walmart, or a local auto parts store such as Autozone or Advance Auto Parts. Some auto parts stores will scan it for free.
Hi, the check engine light will require you to have the engine CPU scanned for trouble code's. This can only be administered with the assistance of a diagnostic computer scan tool OBD II. You can purchase this tool, at your local auto parts store, or you can just have the scan ran at your local auto zone parts store, free of charge. Once the diagnostic scan is administered, you will be able to isolate the issues that have caused the check engine light. This scan tool will display a print out code and the location of the issue, on the engine, as well. There are Many issues that will cause the engine light to illuminate, but the most common cause will be a failed monitoring sensor, or sensor harness failure(separated power wire, or ground). After retrieving the code, it will be interpreted to know what caused the lights to come up and that will be used to fix the problem.
HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED I HAVE SEEN IF ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE OUTPUT DROP TO 11.0 VOLTS THAT WILL CAUSE ABS AND CHECK LIGHT TO COME ON.DRIVE BELT COULD BE SLIPPING.BUT TAKE CAR TO AUTO ZONE OR ANY AUTO PARTS STORE THEY WILL SCAN CAR FREE TO SEE WHAT CAUSING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON.ANY TIME WARNING LIGHTS TURN ON SOMETHING WRONG WITH CAR.IF AUTO ZONE OR AUTO PARTS CANT SCAN FIND PROBLEM TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP LET THEM SCAN VECHICLE.BECAUSE WHEN ABS LIGHT COME ON ABS BRAKE SYSTEM NOT WORKING THE ABS UNIT IS PART OF THE MASTERCYLINDER WHICH IS THE PART MAIN PART BRAKING SYSTEM.
You should go to autozone or advance auto parts stores & get it scanned, usually for free. To get trouble codes stored. If you just want to clear codes without seeing what is wrong, You need to discharge computer memory. Disconnect battery for 2 hours then reattach. Codes will be cleared. If light comes on right away again or over a period of time you need to scan to see what is wrong.
was the engine running when you took the cap off. this will set the check engine light. autozone and advanced auto parts have scanners they will run for free to tell you what make the check engine light come on. maybe other auto parts stores if you don't have those. might just be coincidence. if this helps please reply and good luck
