2001 yukon denali thermostat issue?

My 2001 yukon seems to be having a temperature problem. The temp gauge goes up to almost the red, then quickly back down to the mid range. Is this a thermostat issue, or something else? I have fixed my own cars in the past, is this something I can do?

You have either a late opening thermostat or the fan is coming in late. check both.

The rad is full and no vissible coolant leaks the next check woud be the fan clutch on the water pump if it spins freely when you turn off engine (hot) change it,you need specisl tools to remove

It could be the thermostat but you need to check the fluid level and for any leaks (these could even be pin hole) first. If you have one of those infra-red temperature gauges you can check the temperature of the cooling system in the engine bay to double check. Generally the engine temperature should not go much about 90 deg C - this is when the electric cooling fans kick in - are these turning on?

The speedometer gauge and RPM gauge is not working. The speedometer gauge goes to the max while I am driving. The car itself seems to be running ok. Help! It is a Yukon Denali 2005.

I suspect that your sender is malfunctioning. Todays speedometers and RPM is sent from a sensor/sender near the drive shaft. A magnet on the drive shaft is sensed and the revolutions are converted to RPM and speed.

Check coolant level, and possibly replace thermostat. When a thermostat gets stuck in the closed position, coolant does not circulate thru motor. Gauge stays midrange when driving, because motor is being cooled by air and or the fan. If car seems to operate completely normal, then the gauge is faulty.

overheating can be caused by stuck shut t-stat but u would have heat at-stat stuck open no overheating and no heat. a waterpump that the impeller broke or rotted of can cause your problem but rarly seen does your fan work or any leakage or low coolant can cause air pocket and overheating no heat. let me know and we go foward

sounds like a faulty sender unit not passing the right voltage which is causing the gauge to read high
