You have to check your wiring for a possible short circuit, most probably with the lines of your lights or accessories which doesn't consume much power.

Could be that the alternator is defective. It is possible that it is not recharging the battery.

Lead acid batteries don't like being discharged flat, and it could now be damaged and unable to hold a charge. It does sound as though the voltage regulator part of the alternator is allowing discharge to ground when it should not. You would seem to have a good warranty claim on the battery given they did check the alternator and pronounce it OK.

Hi Donald,

It sounds to me like your alternator decided to give up the ghost. The battery did not have any voltage because there was probably just barely enough power to get the engine started. Then when the voltage got low enough, your onboard computers could no longer function properly and the engine died. However, the battery continued to discharge because the ignition switch was on and all of the systems were still TRYING to operate. Yes, this will cause the entire electrical system to shut down....No battery power causes everything to stop operating. Without the alternator, there is no way for the battery to get recharged.

What you must do is to recharge the battery and test it to make sure it is not dammaged or shorted. Also relace the battery if it does not test good when it is fully charged (many times, a shorted battery cell is what causes an alternator to go bad). The alternator is definately not working, because it would have kept the engine running even if the battery was bad.

In short, you need to replace your alternator and possibly also your battery.

New battery car wont start

may just be a loose terminal. I had mine replaced and it took a few hours before it ran right again. something about the electronic modules take a little time to recharge.
